Cal guard Christian Tucker has entered the transfer portal

Christian Tucker is the next member of Cal's roster to enter his name into the transfer portal. The senior from Mesa, Arizona played in all 33 games and was one of only three players to do so this season for the Bears. Tucker, who transferred to Cal last offseason from UTSA, averaged 1.7 points and 1 assist in those 33 appearances for Mark Madsen's team.

Tucker did make five starts during the 2024-25 season including the finale against Stanford in the ACC Tournament as he stepped into the starting lineup in place of the injured Jeremiah Wilkinson. The 6-foot-3, 180-pound guard played a season-high 37 minutes in that loss and and finished with a season-best 4 assists.

His season high on the scoring end came early in the year against Cal Poly as he contributed 8 points in the victory after hitting a couple 3-pointers. Tucker scored 7 points in the late-February matchup at home against SMU.

He is now the fourth member of Cal's roster to enter the transfer portal since it opened this week along with Wilkinson plus forwards BJ Omot and Joshua Ola-Joseph. Three of the four players who have entered the portal, including Tucker, only transferred to Cal last offseason.

It is shaping up to be another offseason of movement for Madsen and the Bears after they added 10 players from the portal last year.

Trond Grizzell earning plenty of praise this spring

I put together a little feature story on Trond Grizzell who is entering is final season at Cal. The fifth-year senior has a new number this spring and is hoping to add to his game as he returns to the Bears for one last season. Grizzell has earned plenty of praise from some of the new faces around the team for his work ethic and dedication to the craft. He could present Kyle Cefalo and Bryan Harsin with a unique weapon on the inside, and he's working towards becoming a complete threat for the Bears.

Cal spring practice notes: EJ Caminong, Jaron Sagapolutele highlight Day 7 (Scrimmage 1)

Cal has reached the midway point of spring football, and that wrapped up Saturday with Day 7 of work for the Bears. Saturday's practice served as the first scrimmage of the spring with a couple of extended team periods giving the players an opportunity to have their most game-like feel so far this spring. There were referees and the staff allowed drives to play out a bit more than we have seen on the other six days of practice. There were still some situations when the staff called plays dead early or brought the ball back to a certain spot on the field, but it was a good opportunity to see the progress of the team through the first half of the spring.

Justin Wilcox's team will have eight practices following time off for spring break this week when the group returns to the field March 31.

Troy Taylor out

From The Athletic:

Stanford fired football coach Troy Taylor on Tuesday, less than a week after an ESPN report revealed that Taylor had twice been the subject of third-party investigations into complaints from athletic department employees over hostile behavior.

Former Stanford star quarterback Andrew Luck, now the football program’s general manager, became Taylor’s direct supervisor upon taking the job last November and made the decision Tuesday to terminate Taylor after just two seasons on the job.

Cal spring practice quick notes: Bears focus on red zone for Day 5

Cal is midway through its second week of spring practice following Day 5 on the field at California Memorial Stadium Wednesday. The Bears will have two more practices before taking time off for spring break, but Wednesday's practice brought the first day in full pads. It also was the most balanced action that has been seen so far in spring from both the offense and defense.

Day 3 of spring practice at Cal meant shoulder pads as the Bears were able to hit an important point in the spring as they closed out the first week of action at California Memorial Stadium. The pads going on meant a little more competition and energy for Saturday's practice, and it was the defense that stepped up with some impressive plays to close out Week 1.

Cal's Jeremiah Wilkinson named ACC Sixth Man of the Year

Cal has not had the type of season it wanted, but there have been bright spots for the Bears in Year 2 under Mark Madsen. Among the highlights of the season was the emergence of freshman guard Jeremiah Wilkinson who is now the second leading scorer for the Bears entering postseason play. Monday, the ACC revealed its postseason awards and Wilkins was named the ACC Sixth Man of the Year following his standout first season with the Bears.

Wilkinson did not start until the 19th game of the season, but he has been an important part of the rotation since the early going. In all, the Powder Springs, Georgia native has averaged 15.4 points in 31 games and 13 starts for Cal.

When leading scorer Andrej Stojakovic missed time with an injury, Wilkinson stepped up to become the top producer on offense for the Bears. He has scored in double figures in 25 games this season and has hit at least 20 points on 10 occasions.

Wilkinson is coming off his most productive performance in college after he scored a team-high 36 points in Saturday's four-overtime loss to Notre Dame. He has averaged 20.4 points since becoming a starter for the Bears.

The 6-foot-1 guard also earned a spot on the five-man ACC All-Rookie team and is the only player not from Duke or North Carolina to make the list. Cooper Flagg (Duke) Kon Knueppel (Duke), Khaman Maluach (Duke and Ian Jackson (UNC) round out the team.

In addition to Wilkinson's postseason accolades, Stojakovic earned an All-ACC honorable mention nod for his work this year in his first season with the Bears. The sophomore, who transferred from Stanford, led Cal in scoring during the regular season with an average of 16.8 points in 27 appearances.

Stojakovic missed a handful of games for the Bears while working through an injury but proved himself as a talented defender when returning to the lineup. He is second on the team with 1.3 blocks per game, fourth with 4.6 rebounds, tied for second with 1.8 assists as well.

Prior to his injury, Stojakovic was on fire as a scorer with nine games of at least 20 points including reaching the 30-point mark twice. He was stellar on defense late against Notre Dame and finished that loss with 6 blocks to go with 21 points.

The Bears hit the floor hoping to keep their NCAA Tournament hopes alive as they take part in the ACC Tournament on Tuesday. Cal, the No. 15 seed, will square off with 10th-seeded Virginia Tech in Charlotte in the opening round of the tournament. Tipoff is set for 1:30 p.m. PT.

The Cal women's basketball team is headed to the NCAA Tournament as a No. 8 seed in Spokane Regional 4. The Bears will square off with ninth-seeded Mississippi State on Saturday at Galen Center in Los Angeles. A win over the Bulldogs would likely match up Cal with No. 1 seed USC in the second round.

Mississippi State finished the season 21-11 and lost in the second round of the SEC Tournament to rival Ole Miss after finishing 10th in the league during the regular season.

Cal returned to the field Friday as the Bears push through their first week of spring practice. The weather was again not friendly as it was a cold and sometimes rainy practice for Justin Wilcox's team. Still, the two extended team periods provided some insight into the development of the group on both sides of the ball.

Football is back! Cal held its first practice of the spring Wednesday and the rain stayed away just enough for the Bears to get in a full day of action. There were 12 team periods overall that included two team periods.
