Cal has added a commitment from Virginia transfer guard Dai Dai Ames this morning following a visit with the Bears. The sophomore from Chicago began his career at Kansas State and will have two seasons of remaining eligibility with Mark Madsen's team. Ames will head to Berkeley with plenty of experience after starting 26 games this season for the Cavaliers with 31 appearances overall.

The 6-foot-1, 190-pound guard averaged 8.7 points, 1.4 rebounds and 1.9 assists. He connected on 39.7% of his 3-point attempts this season (31 for 78) and hit on 46% of his shots from the field. Cal has lost a couple members of its backcourt to the portal already with Jeremiah Wilkinson and Christian Tucker opting to seek out other opportunities.

Ames can help fill the void left by Wilkinson, who was the ACC Sixth Man of the Year for the Bears.

The new Cal commit was once rated as a top-100 prospect out of Kenwood Academy in Chicago. He finished his high school career ranked 66th overall in the 2023 class and the 19th-best point guard prospect, according to Rivals. He had a decorated high school career that included scoring 65 points in one game.

At Kansas State, Ames played in 31 games and made 16 starts. He averaged 5.2 points and 2 assists as a freshman with the Wildcats. This season he had several games in which he scored in double figures including having 27 points, a career high, against Pitt on 11-of-16 shooting from the field in February.

In Ames, the Bears find a player familiar with the landscape of the ACC and another player with experience. He is the second transfer addition for Madsen's team since the portal opened following the addition of Campbell guard Nolan Dorsey over the weekend.

Florida State, Clemson and Nevada had been some of the other programs reportedly in pursuit of Ames following his sophomore season in Charlottesville.

Jacksonville State transfer center Daveion Harley commits to Cal

Cal added a proven piece to its offensive line group Monday with the addition of Jacksonville State center Daveion Harley. He had some inconsistent PFF numbers but had high marks for his ability in pass protection. He also has played the position before, which is something that the Bears don't have on the roster with either Tyson Ruffins or Lamar Robinson who are both learning on the job at Cal this offseason.

Harley will give Famika Anae some flexibility up front and could eventually slot in as the starting center depending on how quickly he picks things up. Trent Ramsey had moved to center in the spring and served as the primary backup to Ruffins but eventually Robinson slid into that role before Anae moved Ruffins to guard and let Robinson run with the 1s at center.

Harley will have two seasons of eligibility at Cal.

He'll head to the Bears with three seasons of eligibility. The Long Beach Poly grad was committed to Arizona before flipping to the Utes later in the process as a high school recruit. Cal adds Virginia assistant Isaiah Wilkins to Mark Madsen's staff

Cal has hired Virginia assistant Isaiah Wilkins as the replacement fro Amorrow Morgan on Mark Madsen's staff. The UVA alum played for the school from 2015-18 before playing three seasons overseas. He eventually returned to Charlottesville as a graduate assistant before being promoted in ahead of the 2023-24 season.

“I’m incredibly honored and excited to join Coach Madsen and his staff as we elevate this program to new heights,” Wilkins said. “Cal is truly a special place, rich in both tradition and excellence, and I’m ready to serve our student-athletes, the program and the university.”

Morgan moved on from Cal following the season in favor of a move east to Florida State. The Cal assistant had been vital in recruiting efforts, so Wilkins will be looked at in a similar fashion and his youth should certainly help the Bears in that regard.

“We’re incredibly excited to welcome Isaiah and his wife, Catalina, to our Cal Family,” Cal head coach Mark Madsen said. “Isaiah brings a championship mentality from his playing days at Virginia, where he was known for his relentless defense, leadership, and high basketball IQ. He’s quickly established himself as a rising star in the coaching world, and his ability to connect with players, combined with his deep understanding of the game, will make an immediate impact on our program.”

Wilkins was a defensive specialist in his time at UVA and eventually earned the ACC Defensive Player of the Year honor as a senior. He ranks fifth in blocks all time at Virginia and averaged 4.9 points and 4.8 rebounds during his career with the Cavaliers.

CBS reports Harsin is the issue
