Kudos to the boosters for taking this stand and showing they’re serious about Cal needing to prove its institutional commitment to competitive football

Impact analysis: Jaydn Ott to Oklahoma

Jaydn Ott is headed to Oklahoma and that is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to turnover in the Cal running back room. I summarized a wild couple days for the Bears and where they turn now with a depleted running back group.

Cal's first spring portal addition comes at a position of need. The Bears have added a commitment from Chattanooga defensive end Chris Victor this morning. The 6-foot-4, 235-pound edge rusher from Jacksonville began his career at Mississippi Valley State and played two seasons at Chattanooga. In 2024, he had an impressive season and collected 54 tackles to go with a team-high 12 tackles for loss and 4.5 sacks. He also had 6 quarterback hurries and a forced fumble.

OT: Golden State Warriors

Alright, I suspect there are a few Warriors fans on this board looking for some escapism from the Calpocalypse. So as a diversion, I have a W's topic.

I'm in utter disbelief how many legit good NBA players the Warriors have on their roster at this moment. It's like how many legit good teams there are in the Western Conference! I was clamoring for Moses Moody to start over Klay Thompson - and I wanted Thompson traded - last year, Now, in exchange for Thompson, the have DeAnthony Melton, Buddy Heild, and Kyle Anderson, in addition to Moody, and the roster is so deep that they could possibly put Andrew Wiggins at SG, with Kuminga at SF, Green PF, and TJD at Center. Some people say this will hurt spacing, but with Draymond hitting 3s at a decent clip again, it seems to work.

Anyway, all this is to say the roster is exceptionally deep. My question is what do you do if you are the Warriors, both in terms of lineups, and also trade strategy. I mean conventional thinking is you need to package some very good players for an elite talent to compete for a championship, and depth doesn't mean much, but I question if any team has ever had this much depth and young home drafted talent. I think Dunleavy has said how it doesn't make a lot of sense to mortgage the future when you aren't getting to championship level with a trade. Does Giannis make the Warriors a championship threat, or might they be better off not having him, and having so much depth.

Yes, it's pre-season, but the W's are #7 in 3pt Attempts/Game and #2 in 3pt FG% this preseason through four games. The Warriors are also #3 in 3pt FG% Defense. Yes, it's a small sample size, but if 3pt FG% is now the path to championship contention, it seems the current roster is well constructed. Or are the pundits right, and Warriors must make a trade to land a superstar, and who might that be?

MBB Portal Thread

I started a new thread since there was lots of info regarding different boards' targets. The first bit of news is that Pavlovic has entered the portal. I believe that leaves two open scholarships.
  • Per @Harky4 , John Camden from Delaware is on Campus for his OV. Cal is in his top 6 with Purdue, Mississippi State, SMU, OK ST, and GCU
  • Cal is in the top 3 for JUCO big Isaac Garrett with FSU and Oakland (heavy favorites after his OV)
  • Camron McDowell—Cal offered the high-scoring DII guard. There is not much information on his recruitment other than that fhe visited Utah.

Sorta OT - Oregon State & Wazzup 2025 tv deal soon

Cal's first game might be on the CW! CW will be broadcasting nine of the Beavs and Cougs home games in 2025. They will have another "name" provider broadcast their other four games. Other providers mentioned include Fox and TNT

John Canzano has the scoop in his column.

Cal is headed towards the final day of spring practice as the Bears host their showcase event on Saturday inside Cal Memorial Stadium. Day 14 featured a number of big plays, particularly on offense, but it was the defense that has been the focus this week with the staff changes announced Thursday by head coach Justin Wilcox.

Outside linebackers coach Vic So'oto and defensive backs coach Terrence Brown went into Friday's practice as the new co-defensive coordinators for the team. There is still some mystery about who will call plays once the season arrives, but both coaches gave their thoughts on what it means to have an expanded role plus move up as coaches under Wilcox.

Sammie Yeanay

It is being reported that Sammie Yeanay of Grand Canyon has committed to Cal MBB as a PF. Sammie played a grand total of 5 games last season and averaged 5.4 minutes per game. I do hope that Sammie has been recruited to join Devin Curtis deep down the bench and that better recruiting news is forthcoming in relation to a P5 starter who is committing in order to make us ACC competitive. Sorry, but I have to say Nay, and not Yea, to Yea-Nay, because if he could not get off Grand Canyon's bench (no injury is reported to explain his lack of PT), then why should we expect him to be a force for us next season in the post? Hopefully Sammie's recruitment indicates that Devin Curtis is leaving,

NEWS: Cal names full defensive staff

The Bears have announced their new defensive staff changes ahead of Saturday's spring showcase. Terrence Brown and Vic So'oto have been promoted to co-defensive coordinators while Keith Heyward and Bob Gregory have officially been announced as new additions to the staff as defensive backs coach and senior defensive assistant, respectively.

Defensive line coach Andrew Browning will add the run game coordinator to his title as well.

Heyward recently arrived in Berkeley to begin working with the team while Gregory has been around for a couple weeks. Now that is announced they can begin their full duties. I'd expect Gregory to spend most of his time with the linebacker unit helping out first-year inside linebacker coach Mike Bruno.

The Bears will effectively have three defensive backs coaches as Brown is expected to continue working with the secondary group despite his additional role as co-defensive coordinator.

Michigan transfer guard Justin Pippen announces commitment to Cal

Michigan guard Justin Pippen has announced his commitment to Cal this morning. The 6-foot-3, 180-pound freshman from Los Angeles played in 28 games as a reserve during his first season with the Wolverines and averaged 1.6 points, 0.7 rebounds and 0.6 assists in 6.7 minutes per game this season. The Chatsworth-Sierra Canyon alum was a top-100 prospect according to Rivals in the 2024 rankings.

Pippen will get his chance to return to the West Coast with his move to Cal and will help Mark Madsen fill out his roster following several departures this offseason. He is the third transfer guard to join the Bears since the portal opened following Virginia transfer Dai Dai Ames and Campbell transfer Nolan Dorsey.

Overall, Madsen's staff has added four transfers to the roster for the 2025-26 season with Loyola Maryland big man Milos Ilic rounding out the group so far. Cal is losing several guards from this year's team both through exhaustion of eligibility and transfers. Star guard Jeremiah Wilkinson left the Bears after the season and has since transferred to Georgia leaving a big hole in the back court.

Starting point guard Jovan Blacksher Jr. was in his last season of eligibility this year while backup Christian Tucker also decided to enter the portal following the 14-19 campaign in Year 2 under Madsen.

At Cal, Pippen will get the opportunity to ignite his career after becoming a top recruit in the 2024 class while at Sierra Canyon, where he was a teammate with several high-profile recruits including current NBA reserve Bronny James.

Pippen, the son of former NBA star and Naismith Hall of Fame member Scottie Pippen, emerged as a top prospect later in his career sparking a rise up the rankings as a senior.

Here is what the Rivals national team wrote at the time: "The 2024 guard had a coming out party at the Hoophall West invitational in early December and has kept his momentum since, winning MVP at the Beverly Hills Tournament in mid December. He’s become a more complete scorer and smarter passer in the last year and has his developing game has paves the way for a new brand of confidence, as Pippen has not shied away from the spotlight this year as one of the leaders of a talented Sierra Canyon that now looks to him to deliver in big games. Pippen was looked at as a fringe high-major prospect a year or so ago, but things have changed this year."

Pippen's best performance as a freshman came against Purdue Fort Wayne in a December matchup in which he scored 10 points on 4-of-8 shooting to go with a season-best 4 rebounds and 2 assists. He had a season-high 4 assists on the road at Rutgers later in the season.
