Cal picked 11th in Pac-12 preseason basketball poll; Video from Pac-12 Media Day

Cal was 11th. Here's the full poll ...

Again, I'm in San Francisco for Pac-12 Media Day today (finishing up the football story this morning too). Let me know what specific questions you'd like me to cover with Mark Fox and the players. I know one is where will the shooting come from.

Another new offer for Cal in the 2023 class tonight. Linebacker Solomone Malafu added the Bears to his list as his productive offseason continues. The Kapa'a, Hawaii recruit has been picking up offers throughout the course of the spring, and he has turned in some solid performances on the camp circuit. Utah, Arizona, Arizona State and Boise State are some of the schools that have jumped into the mix with offers already. He has good size and is someone who is likely only going to see his recruitment pick up as the process moves ahead. His 7v7 team won a big tournament today out in Nevada, so he is getting some more attention from that as well.

Matchup Breakdown: Cal has to contend with a Ducks team riding as much momentum as anyone in college football

Jesse's breakdown:

I've had a day and a half from hell and am behind on everything, so I accept any frustration. Had two flights yesterday and get to Arizona to find out my hotel was overbooked and it takes forever through Priceline to get refunded/rebooked only to end up in a sh**y motel after initially booking a nice Holiday Inn. Then straight to a HS game last night in Phoenix and my aging laptop died again this morning. We're back to life, beyond stressed and playing catch-up.

I have two more games to get through on the Guess the Score standings -- have been chipping away. I will get as much done before I go to sleep.

Anyways, take any shots you want. It's deserved, it's fair, all good. I'll be writing and will read them in a bit :)

Soooo...Big Board?

@Ryan Young I've been a member of this board since 2009 and I've seen admins come and go. I try to give everyone the benefit of the doubt when they start to get their footing and understand how this board works. I think you'll find that all we ask is some follow-up on promises made.

People have asked for a big board for some time now and we've kept being told that it's coming. I think its fair to say that you haven't delivered on your promise. Maybe it's because you're running 3 boards and don't have time or maybe this community just isn't priority to you, either way I'm finding it harder and harder to keep my subscription here.

OV recap: DE Frederick Williams III recaps Cal visit

Cal hosted three-star defensive end Frederick Williams III for his first official visit of the fall over the weekend, and it was a productive trip for the 2023 edge rusher from Serra High School down south in Gardena. Williams was able to finally get a chance to experience a game day at Cal, and it helped give him a better overall perspective on the team and program. Williams is not rushing his decision at this point with Washington, Oregon State and a few others involved still. However, he admits the Bears did help themselves after the weekend trip to Berkeley.

"I’ve always had a great relationship with Cal. So to be able to take an official visit and to spend more time with the coaches made that bond even stronger, and they are definitely a program I am more excited about."

You can read the full visit recap at the link up top. He got leg whipped Friday night early in the game when I watched him play, so he missed most of the matchup against Alemany. He still wanted to make the visit happen despite the injury, but he was definitely a little banged up this weekend.

UW is sending its defensive line coach out to see him this week since the Huskies have a bye, so that is still one program to watch in his recruitment. Oregon State has also been make a bigger push as of late. Right now he only has tentative plans to visit Washington at the end of the season.

I still think he's a longshot, but anything is possible with him taking the visit. I didn't know about that earlier in the week. Matt is going to his game tonight to talk to him about it. We'll see what he says in general.

Justin Wilcox, Jack Plummer talk about losing Matthew Cindric for the season

Cal's offensive line situation went from bad to worse as coach Justin Wilcox announced Saturday night that veteran right guard Matthew Cindric will miss the rest of the season with an undisclosed upper body injury.

"He'll be out for the rest of the season, unfortunately," Wilcox said. "He's an extremely tough guy. He got injured early in the game last week and really didn't mention it and just played the entire game, and unfortunately it's an injury that needs to be repaired and will miss the rest of the year, but he is a warrior of a person."

Cindric, a fifth-year senior, started the first three games at center before sliding over to right guard for the next three.

"That's a big loss. Just a great human being, a great person, great offensive lineman. So yeah, we're feeling for Cindo and we wish he could be out there for us," quarterback Jack Plummer said.

To patch things together, Brayden Rohme moved into the starting lineup at left tackle, Ben Coleman slid over to left guard, Brian Driscoll manned center as usual, Sioape Vatikani started at right guard and T.J. Session was at right tackle.

The Bears gave up 12 QB pressures overall, per PFF, and 5 sacks while the run game also struggled to get anything going behind the unit as the running backs averaged just 3.4 yards per carry, led by DeCarlos Brooks' 43 yards on 10 carries. Jaydn Ott managed only 38 yards on 14 attempts.

"There's some good and some things we need to improve upon," Wilcox said. "We need to protect the quarterback, there's a couple more runs in there where we probably could have caught some creases. I thought they competed hard, but you know again, effort and toughness and competitiveness is a requirement, pre-requisite to perform well, but we didn't perform consistently enough. We've got to continue to make strides, so we'll work with them again starting Monday."

Quarterback Jack Plummer put a positive spin on the performance of the line.

"I thought they did at times really good at blocking the box and freeing up some lanes for our running backs," he said. "There was a couple times where we were getting 6 or 7, 8 on runs and that's really efficient, so I thought they did a good job with that. And at times they were really studding them up there at the line and giving me some time to throws. So we'll just keep building. Those guys are good players and they care. Yeah, so they get shuffled around, but I think they'll mesh together and we've still got a lot of football left."

Let's pick the pac-12 games - Week 8

3-2 last week for 26-25 for the year. 1-0 for my lock of the week for 2-5 for the year: https://cal.forums.rivals.com/threads/lets-pick-the-pac-12-games-week-7.31494/

[home team in italics]

Oregon by 6 over fUCLA - No idea. Oregon covers I guess.

Furd by 3 over ASU - This is a ridiculously low spread for a furd team coming off a road ND win at home. That being said I'm picking ASU for shits.

Oregon State by 24 over Colorado - They've had their gift from cal football, now they can back to sucking. Oregon State covers.

UW by 7.5 over Cal - This screams bad matchup for cal. Good offense in UW and a bad defense for UW that we won't take advantage of. That being said this is at home and we are a td+ underdog and that is a Wilcox cover/moral victory special. Cal covers, but loses.

Non conference lock of the week: Texas by 6 over Oklahoma State - Oklahoma state covers.
