Cal forward Rytis Petraitis reflects on his decision to pick the Bears

I caught up with new Cal forward Rytis Petraitis to discuss his decision to sign with Cal recently and his expectations as he makes the move from Air Force. We discussed his family background with two parents who played the game in the then Pac-10, what he brings to the table as a player and much more.
You can read the full update at the link above.

"It was very hard to leave Air Force, but in the end Cal had a better opportunity for me to play pro after college wether it’s in Europe or in the NBA," he said. "I just loved the family atmosphere that was offered by Cal and the coaching staff."

Former top-100 prospect and Ohio State transfer receiver Kyion Grayes has announced his commitment to the Bears this morning. The Chandler, Arizona native only played in two games in two seasons with the Buckeyes and caught one pass for 2 yards. He didn't make an appearance in 2023 after redshirting in 2022 leaving him with three seasons of eligibility at Cal.

He was previously rated as the 19th-best receiver in the 2022 class by Rivals and No. 3 player from Arizona.

Grayes has had difficulties cracking a receiver rotation that is plenty deep at OSU, but he should be right in the mix with the Bears.

Andrej Stojakovic visiting Cal

Have been able to confirm reports that Stanford forward Andrej Stojakovic will be taking an official visit to Cal beginning April 19. The freshman is a former McDonald's All-American who averaged 7.8 points and 3.4 rebounds this season across the Bay. A Carmichael native, the word has been that he would prefer to stay close to home at his next stop, so not a big surprise that Cal is in the mix here.

He'd be a great piece for Madsen and Co. to begin this rebuild. I watched him play a ton as a high school prospect, and he has a lot more to his game than he's been able to show at the college level. With the right coaching, he could be a high-level scorer.

Cal has landed its impact safety for the transfer season. Four-star transfer Ryan Yaites has announced his commitment to the Bears after one season at LSU. The former four-star recruit from Denton (Texas) Guyer HS strongly considered the Bears out of high school before picking the Tigers.

Now, he'll join the program as the top-rated transfer this offseason.

The 6-foot-1, 200-pound safety played in 13 games in his freshman season at LSU and came away with 18 tackles and one pass defensed. He currently checks in at No. 64 in the Rivals portal rankings.

The 6-foot-9, 250-pound center from Mali has a ton of experience having played in 121 games through four seasons with the Spartans. He's not a major scoring threat (2.7 ppg in his career) but he will provide an inside presence on defense and give the Bears a proven rebounder this fall.

The PNW connections for Cal continue to grow strong, and the Bears add another important piece to the secondary as former four-star recruit and Oklahoma transfer cornerback Jasiah Wagoner announces his commitment today.

The Bears have to build some more depth in the secondary and raise the talent level there, and Wagoner does both of those things. Collin Gamble and Kaylin Moore going into the portal opens up some room in the secondary.

Recruiting staff continues to expand

Cal has announced the addition of Amanda Yount as the new director of on-campus recruiting for the Bears. Yount previously worked as part of the NIL collective at Florida State and will help the Bears continue to expand the recruiting department, allowing Marshall Cherrington an opportunity to dedicate his focus even more into the player personnel side of things. The more help the better in today's game, and Cal is definitely showing some dedication toward expanding its recruiting department this offseason.

Stanford transfer wing Andrej Stojakovic announces commitment to Cal

Cal's top priority this offseason has been landing Andrej Stojakovic. The Bears have accomplished that goal as they hold off Kentucky, North Carolina and others for the former top-50 recruit and McDonald's All-American. Stojakovic, rated as a four-star transfer and is ranked No. 70 by Rivals in the portal rankings, is headed to Cal and as the pull to stay closer to home wins out for the Sacramento native.

He will be the focal point for the Bears this fall as he makes the move across the Bay. A major recruiting victory for Mark Madsen and the staff, the best by these coaches so far IMO.

A big day for the Bears.

Michael Luckhurst leaving the team

Cal kicker Michael Luckhurst’s time with the football team has come to an end. The coaches let him kick during the spring game, and the plan has been in place for a little bit now. He will finish his college career as a member of the men’s soccer team at Cal.

Luckhurst had been the Bears’ starting kicker but was pushed out of the role after some struggles. He was never able to get back on track and eventually the Bears decided to add Ryan Coe from North Carolina this offseason. Luckhurst’s only live action came on the final day.
