HS QB Recruiting - Cal's experience

With Kai Millner transferring, got me thinking how difficult and low the odds are for a HS QB recruit ever becoming a starter. Specifically, I believe the odds of a HS QB signing with a P-5 school and eventually starting for the school they signed with is not only low but has become dramatically lower since the portal. It seems a majority of starters are now transfers, often from lower level schools. If Chandler Rogers signs with us and becomes our starting QB, it's yet another example. Anyway, I've tracked our HS QB recruits since 1986...

First, those that became starters for us:

Troy Taylor (class of 86), Mike Pawlawski (87), Dave Barr (90), Pat Barnes (93), Kyle Boller (99), Nate Longshore (04), Kevin Riley (06), Jared Goff (13), Ross Bowers (15), Chase Garbers (17)

Those that didn't:

Mike Beebe (88), Perry Klein (89), Todd Preston (91), Ziv Gottliev (92), Trevor Thompson (94), Mike Murphy (95), Terry Hess and Brad Steele (96), Samuel Clemons (97), David Page (98), Ryan Sorahan (99), Reggie Robertson (01), Richard Schwartz (01), Steve Levy (02), Cary Dove (03), Kyle Reed (05), Brock Mansion (07), Beau Sweeney (08), Allan Bridgford (09), Austin Hinder (10), Kyle Boehm (11), Zach Kline (12), Luke Rubenzer and Chase Forrest (14), Max Gilliam and Vic Viramontes (16), Spencer Brasche (19), Jaden Casey and Zach Johnson (20), Kai Millner (21) and Fernando Mendoza (tbd, 22).

10 out of 32 high school recruits became starters. I don't think we are that unusual tbh. I guess my point is that Millner leaving is par for the course, historically, and even more common going forward where QB1 is most likely a transfer or the 1/5 HS qb recruit to "make it".

UCLA QB question

Can someone explain the UCLA QB recruiting thinking? They had visits from DJ Uguiagalelei, a visit from Collin Schlee (who apparently committed), have 2023 HS commit Luke Duncan, are trying to get Dante Moore to flip from Oregon. Meanwhile Justyn Martin and Ethan Garbers, presumably, are still on the roster. That's a lot of quarterbacks for one school.

In-depth interview with transfer QB target Chandler Rogers

As I noted in the other thread, he seems to leave little doubt that he plans to end up at Cal after a strong recruiting visit over the weekend. He also shares that he got the indication Jack Plummer was likely moving on.

OT: NBA

Couldn’t find the other thread and I think amidst the USC and UCLA news the absolute ridiculousness of the offseason so far has been overlooked. Curious to hear everyones thoughts on all the trades, the KD/Kyrie thing, etc.

Personally I think that the Wolves are going to massively regret the Gobert trade.

Visitor List Dec. 16-18

As you know, big, big recruiting weekend across the country, with a couple of A-list transfers checking out Cal. As promised, here is the what we've compiled:

Texas A&M defensive end transfer Tunmise Adeleye

The former five-star defensive end is down to a final four of Cal, Miami, Michigan State and USC. He visited Michigan State last weekend and Miami the middle of this week before heading to Cal. Right now, he does not have a USC visit planned. Getting him to Berkeley is absolutely huge -- now they have to close.

He only appeared in three games this season, recording 3 QB hurries and 6 tackles.

Oregon running back transfer Byron Cardwell

The former four-star running back from San Diego, Cardwell was an immediate hit as a freshman at Oregon in 2021, rushing for 417 yards (6.8 YPC) and 3 TDs while working behind Travis Dye. When Dye and CJ Verdell left the program last offseason, it figured the path was clear for Cardwell to be the featured back in 2022, but along with a new coaching staff came the emergence of transfer additions Bucky Irving and Noah Whittington. Cardwell was passed over and also injured most of the season. (Oregon doesn't clarify injury situations so it was hard to know what was going on throughout the fall with Cardwell.) He took an official visit to UCLA last weekend and has since retweeted a Dante Moore-UCLA tweet. It would seem the Bears have some work to do here -- the Bruins have a lot of sell him with Zach Charbonnet's incredible production now moving on to the NFL -- but he's taking the Cal trip for a reason, so the chance is there.

Louisiana Monroe QB transfer Chandler Rogers

The redshirt sophomore (two years of eligibility left) passed for 2,403 yards, 15 touchdowns and 7 interceptions and rushed for 353 yards and 5 touchdowns this season for ULM. His best game came against South Alabama, when he completed 20 of 27 passes for 371 yards, 4 TDs and 1 INT. Since entering the portal, he's received offers from Cal, Liberty, Arkansas State and Jacksonville State.

East LA College OT Max Iheanachor

He's focused on four schools -- Kansas (which he visited last weekend), BYU (where he visited earlier this week) Cal and Arizona State (which he also plans to visit). He's expected to announce a decision on Dec. 21.

Matt and I will work to track down reaction at the conclusion of these visits from each guy.

World Cup Final

I am surprised that nobody has posted anything about the fantastic World Cup match between Argentina and France. It truly was a memorable match with many twists and turns, with the last 10 or so minutes of regulation, the 2 overtime periods and the shoot out being thrilling. Messi deservedly got his championship and now is in the conversation for world-football's GOAT (although Pele and Maradona are hard to dismiss). I was rooting for Argentina to dethrone the French defending champions, because despite the shocking loss to Saudi Arabia, the Argentines deserved their chance to claim the honor of being the best of the best. Yes, it was worth getting up at 7:00 on a Sunday.

Jim Knowlton gives an awful interview about Cal men's basketball

What is this nonsense:https://www.si.com/college/cal/basketball/knowlton-on-fox
“The kind of start that we’ve had this year is just unacceptable. We take responsibility for that. I truly believe as an AD you have to show some tactical patience. You have to evaluate exactly where you are, what are the options and how can we continue to get better.

“No one’s going to make excuses. Mark’s not making excuses. We’ve had some injuries, we’ve had some COVID, we’ve had some challenges this year. But the bottom line is we’re not good enough and we are all, every single person that’s associated with this program, is working hard to set the student-athletes up for success and to find a path that will allow us to win games.”
Literally says there are no excuses then makes up excuses a sentence later.
“I’m not saying I do see an upside or I don’t see an upside. All I’m saying is I’m working with Mark, working with the program and giving them a chance to get a couple of these players back and to get that opportunity to put some wins under their belt.”

SOME wins. That is the barometer of success.
“I would say winning a national championship would satisfy everybody. Of course, that’s what everyone starts the season wanting. Are we going to be satisfied with our season? I have no idea . . . but I guarantee you we’re not satisfied with the start of the season that we’ve had.
This dude is talking about national championships with an 0-11 team.
“As we look to the future, yes, we want to get a couple of our players back. We’d like to have four of them back. And if we had four of them back that helps give us the depth we need at the guard position, the center position. All of those injured players will help us with the depth we need to compete in the Pac-12 schedule.

Haven't we known all but one of these guys were going to be injured at this point months ago? Where are the adjustments?
“It’s absolutely a concern. We want Haas to be a home-court advantage. When I think about our Stanford game last year when the entire place was rocking (with 8,773 fans), that was a home-court advantage for our student-athletes. And that’s the home environment I would love to have every single home game in Haas Pavilion.

Bragging about 75% attendance at a rivalry game is a new low. Even 3-7 Cal sold out BIg Game.

Absolutely horrendous stuff. The biggest case against firing Mark Fox is Jim Knowlton hiring his replacement.

Clemson LB Sergio Allen visiting Cal on Wednesday evening

Cal is hosting Clemson LB Sergio Allen tonight. This was his third year of college football, but he played in only 2 games so he should be able to retain the year of eligibility.

He was originally a three-star prospect out of Georgia in the 2020 recruiting class:

Taxing UCLOL

Wilner droppings:

"By imposing a tax on UCLA that would essentially serve as a subsidy for Cal, the regents would help the Bears offset the expected reduction in revenue."

Considering that the Baby Bears stole the colors, a fight song, and a version of our mascot, it's only fair that the Regents make the Southern Campus pay for something they took from Cal...
