I just caught up with 2019 3-star point guard Joel Brown, who was offered by Cal earlier today. While his offers list is relatively modest, he does have more power five programs coming after him that could offer him soon. Cal is offering him at a good time. Below are key quotes. The rest will be saved for the article.
"My main strengths on the floor is being a great passer, playing defense, communicating, getting into the paint at will and finishing around the basket. I’m able to find guys and make plays for others. I’m good at communicating and making sure we are all on the same page. With my quickness and first step I’m able to get to the paint and finish around contact using both hands." -On his strengths.
"I know they play in the PAC-12, they’ve got Jaylen Brown, Jabari Bird and Ivan Rabb in the league. They are the number 1 public university in the country. They’ve been eying me for the past 3 weeks. The pitch has been the style of play fits well for me. The PAC is a great conference and I’ll be surrounded with great players that I can work with. Great environment in San Francisco also!"-On what he knows about the Cal program and his relationship with them.
"It most definitely does. I’ve got a 3.6 GPA so for me academics is important because after basketball I’ll be able to fall back on the major I’ve achieved after graduating. Academics is definitely big for my parents as well."-On academics.
"Yes, probably within the next 2-3 weeks. So ending of September or early October."-On visiting Cal.
"Vandy, Clemson, ASU, Seton Hall, and Minnesota. No visits scheduled. Patiently waiting to speak with my parents and figure things out."-On who else is after him the hardest.
"I’d love to during the first signing period around my birthday. So the goal is first signing period so I don’t have much to worry about during the season."-On a decision timeline.
