Dykes made a great call for the onside kick which definitely propelled Cal to victory. But Leach made a horrible decision on the fake punt attempt in the 3rd quarter. I have no problem. For Leach to go for it on 4th down...in fact I thought it would have been an aggressive play. He was up 21-13 at the time...had the ball at midfield...and the way his offense was moving...there was good reason to think they could go up 28-13 and they could be smelling upset. As a big underdog I would applaud that move. But to call a fake with your punter....poor kid does not know how to run with the football. He got cracked hard and coughed up the ball....that was a HUGE play and got Cal back into the game.
Score 1 for Dykes and -1 for Leach. However...how did everyone feel about Dykes going for 2 pt conversions twice!?!? Personally, I think it's foolish for coaches to"chase" points by going for 2 with more than 5 mins left. Dykes got bailed out with the replay review guys. But Brian Kelleys essentially blew Note Dame's chance for an OT victory because he went for 2 pts twice. If he just kicks the extra points...ND ties the game with their final TD....amazing to see coaches bungle the 2 pt decision so frequently.
