3-star SF Nick Robinson picks St. Joseph’s over Cal
By Connor Letourneau

Nick Robinson has committed to St. Joseph’s over Cal, the three-star small forward announced
Wednesday afternoon.

“After a tough and long recruiting process, I … have decided to continue my basketball career at St Joseph’s University!” Robinson tweeted. “I couldn’t have done this without support from my coaches and family.”

The 6-foot-5, 185-pound Robinson became a focus for the Bears after four-star shooting guard Tyson Jolly was granted a release last month from his national letter of intent. A former Indiana State commit out of Chicago’s Kenwood Academy, Robinson visited Cal this past weekend with Bears commit Dontae Coleman.

A commitment from Robinson would’ve raised questions about the Bears’ roster going forward. Given the recent commitment of UNLV transfer Jordan Cornish, they are at their scholarship limit for 2016-17. Freshmen Ivan Rabb and Jaylen Brown, both projected lottery picks in June’s NBA draft, still have yet to announce whether they’re turning pro.

At the start of the late signing period Wednesday, Coleman — an unrated JUCO point guard — was Cal’s lone pledge in the 2016 class. Coleman told The Chronicle that he will “more than likely” sign with the Bears this week.

The Bears have reportedly reached out to four-star point guard Charlie Moore, who was granted a release last week from his NLI with Memphis. They are also in the mix for at least four transfers: Arkansas point guard Jimmy Whitt, Columbia guard Grant Mullins, Charleston guard Canyon Barry and Miami guard James Palmer.

Cal is trying to shore up its 2016 class with just two full-time assistant coaches. Assistant Yann Hufnagel — the subject of a seven-month probe into sexual-harassment allegations — resigned last week, dropping an appeal of his termination.

Hufnagel has taken the same job at Nevada. He helped lead the recruitment of Jolly and Cal’s two 2017 commits: shooting guards Alec Hickman and Jemarl Baker.
