Cal Picked to Finish Fourth In Pac-12

The Golden Bears Were Picked To Finish Fourth By League Media While Oregon Is Tabbed To Win The Title


SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – The California Golden Bears are expected to finish fourth in the Pac-12 in 2016-17, according to a vote by media who regularly cover the conference.


The Bears are expected to finish behind early favorite Oregon, followed by second-place Arizona and third-place UCLA. Cal received 209 points overall, while Oregon earned 23 first-place votes and 320 points and Arizona drew four first-place votes and 298 points.


Colorado (199 points), Washington (167), USC (163), Utah (142), Oregon State (122), Stanford (119), Arizona State (78) and Washington State (30) follow the Bears, respectively.


Cal returns two bona fide starters in senior Jabari Bird and sophomore Ivan Rabb this season.Rabb, an All-America and Karl Malone Power Forward of the Year candidate this season, earned second-team All-Pac-12 and Pac-12 All-Freshman laurels after a record-breaking rookie season that saw him set the school freshman record with 291 rebounds on the year. He ranked second in the conference and led the Golden Bears in field goal percentage (61.5 percent), rebounding (8.6 rebounds per game) and blocks (42). Bird owns 55 career starts and averaged 10.4 points and 3.3 rebounds with 61 three-pointers, 31 assists and 17 steals as a junior.


The Bears also return a slew of battle-tested veterans, including seniors Sam Singer (3.7 ppg, 90 assists) and Stephen Domingo (1.7 ppg, 1.8 rpg) and juniors Kingsley Okoroh (1.5 ppg, 33 blocks) and Kameron Rooks (3.6 ppg, 4.9 rpg), as well as five versatile newcomers immediately available for the 2016-17 season – Grant Mullins, Charlie Moore, Don Coleman, Koko Kurdoghlian and Derek King.


Media have correctly picked the Conference winner 14 times in 24 tries. Last season, Cal was predicted to finish second and wrapped up the season tied for third with Arizona following a 12-6 record in conference action. Cal reached the Pac-12 Tournament semifinals, falling to No. 12 Utah 82-78 in overtime.


Fans will get their first opportunity to see the Bears in person at an exhibition game against Cal Baptist on Thursday, Nov. 3 at 7 p.m. in Haas Pavilion. The regular season tips off on Friday, Nov. 11 at 7 p.m.against South Dakota State in Berkeley.
