Immediate thoughts (TL;DR):
1. Starkville defense too much to handle, leading to…
2. …Oxford OL was bad, Cal QB offeree Abraham not in rhythm all game
3. meaning Metcalf had few opportunities (and also may have been hurt). I wouldn't draw too many conclusions about DK from this game
4. BUT AJ BROWN IS THE TRUUUUTH
Most relevant story for Brown in this game:
~6 min. left in 4th quarter, Oxford down 7-20 on a must-score possession. They’re 4th & goal fat like…the Starkville 25. I believe they ran a hook&ladder, executed perfectly and pitched back to the second WR who runs towards the left pylon!!! Looks like he’s about to score—GETS NAILED BY AJ BROWN MOONLIGHTING AT SAFETY AT THE HALF-YARD LINE FOR THE SAVE. Brown already had 192 yards catching at that point.
ESPN actually recognized Brown is considering us, lol. That’s rare; even DLS prospects on TV don't have Cal listed on schools of interest.
ESPN announcers On Brown’s recruitment:
“I think it would be a punch in the gut if Mississippi State lets him out of the city”
“Some ppl think it’s a slam dunk. Some ppl want to go away for college. Some kids are attracted to diff systems..relationships. *slight Alabama slobbing* ‘If you don’t take this [slot] now, we won’t come back’ But I don’t care! This is a man you make room for.”

Game thoughts
Starkville
- AJ brown 192 yds by early 4th, had some cramps, doesn’t seem to be showing much hustle in between plays, a little lethargic, but dude just makes plays. got some big ol hands or something. half the time he’s pulling down the ball with one hand, not one for ball security though, holds it out while trying to shake. hard to bring down. dangerous down sidelines.
- having Brown on the field is really a nice decoy for Starkville, opened other guys for TDs/first downs
- Starkville’s QB has a funny but quick throwing motion
- defense looks punishing, but sloppy, giving up free yards from penalties—multiple unsportsmanlike conducts (late hits OOB). really good run def.
- Stark been playing 4 down linemen all game and their linebackers (LB Willie Gay is the other major D1 prospect on their team) making fast plays
Oxford
- scores on 1st possession of game, doesn’t scored again. awful stretch of possessions that was 2013 Cal-like: punt, punt, punt, int, punt,
- think i saw Metcalf line up opposite from Brown, actually broke up a pass, too
- Metcalf fumbled, limps off, possible cramp or slight injury, plays intermittently thereafter
- as of mid 3rd Q, abraham 9/19, 1 INT, Metcalf had 2 catches for -4 yds.
- abraham looks shaken, a couple drops haven’t helped move the chains. he’s rolling out quite a bit, no confidence in pass pro
- Metcalf two 1st down catches on sidelines, immediately forced OOB each time
- their only semi-productive RB, some stocky white junior RB (dad is Ole Miss bball coach) gets hurt, kinda lands on his neck, goes off for concussion test
