A Zoomcast was held yesterday featuring Knowlton, Fox, John and Mann from Cal, 15 major donors and myself. Due to confidentiality, I will report only highlights that are easily verified through public sources and refrain from disclosing comments made about specific players. More than half of the Zoomcast was Q&As. What is interesting, there was no mention of either recruiting or a practice facility.
Scheduling for non-conference games has become a concern. Because of the serious Covid restrictions that were imposed by the PAC and relevant public bodies which denied us the ability to make solid commitments to play games, we were dropped from the Kansas City tournament and had several scheduled non-conference opponents cancel their games. So, we are in late September with the task of building a new non-conference schedule. Since our Covid testing equipment does not travel, away games are very hard to do safely.
We are behind most other teams when it comes to S&C work and practicing, including several PAC teams, which puts us at a distinct competitive disadvantage. Per Fox, our roster will be better and deeper this year and will feature better outside shooting to complement Matt, but most other PAC teams also have improved. Added depth will allow our starters the opportunity to stay fresher, especially late in the season. Jarad Hyder's waiver still is pending.
Covid-centric or related expenses add to the financial pressure. For example, special housing had to be procured for our players with the assistance of donations via the Cal Men's Basketball Excellence Fund.
As far as fans being allowed to attend games in Haas this season, there is no way to answer that question until 2021. The logistics involved with making Haas safe for the fans and players is not going to be simple. For example, should fans have to be tested to be admitted, and if so, how, where and when are those tests to be conducted?
