One of his teammates at Elev8's fathers tapes every game and posts them on YouTube thus one can watch Jolly play full games vs. highlights reels.
Here's what I see:
- Pure Shooting guard with a decent handle. Jolly's a very good spot up three point shooter. Not the quickest release but it's smooth and he sets his feet well and shoots with good balance and a nice rotation on the ball.
- A good but not elite athlete. I see a better first step quickness and hops than Mathews and Wallace but not at the level of a Brown or Bird in this regard.
- His handle is serviceable but not great. Better than either Bird or Mathews when they got to Cal but not yet able to navigate in traffic or run a team as a PG
- A willing but below average passer. Unselfish player perhaps to a fault. His passes however, are not crisp and he does not understand good angles on post entry and is over eager to make longer and cross court passes that lead to turnovers. Court vision is just average
- A very good defender. Quick feet, strong body, knows how to keep his body vertical, uses his long arms effectively. At his age and level, he's way ahead of the curve here.
- Offense off the bounce. Not as aggressive as I expected here. Some of this is that he's playing against elite prep teams with very good length so the easy finishes he got in HS are not there. He's quick and can leap but is not yet a good finisher inside. Doesn't have great body control or the array of shots inside 5 feet that 6'3" guards need. Does go up strong and has a body that can take contact and finish
- Midrange game. He wants this to be there as he doesn't over penetrate and charge much and can get by his man with relative ease. His release on his jumper is a tad slow and he's a better shooter standing still than when moving forward. Still, pretty good for someone at this stage
- Rebounder. A willing rebounder for a guard his size. Likes to stick his nose in there. Strength and hops help him here.
- FT Shooter. Very good.
- Motor: He's not as all out aggressive or scrappy as I had hoped. Not instinctual for him to go after loose balls and he's not a energizer bunny. Can turn it on when he wants on defense and lock people up.
Net net: He's not a McDs AA/Elite 5 star talent. He lacks the explosive athleticism and/or the skillset at this point to be a top 25 player. I think he fits as a top 50-75 kid. Where he is elite is as a defender and that will translate very well to the Pac 12. He's a plus shooter who has better upside IMO as a dribble drive finisher than Mathews and perhaps even Bird. He's going to be a very good all around player at Cal. As his handle and offensive toolbox approve, he has a chance to be exceptionally good. I would be surprised if he didn't get minutes right away next year. And I expect him to have a chance to be one of our better players as a sophomore.
