In an interview last month, Williams said of Dykes, "I couldn't ask for any more from him right now." That evaluation wasn't restricted to football matters. He praised Dykes for turning around the program's embarrassing academic performance in the years before he arrived.
"We still have big donors, big football alums, who say 3-9 and 95-percent graduation rate trumps Rose Bowl," Williams said then. "Sonny is accomplishing that. He's on his way to a good record.
"The thing we're most proud about, the thing that's most important, is the academics. He's getting us there."
The only thing that mitigates the disaster of that statement is that it occurred before we lost to Utah, we were 5-0 at the time.
However, Williams needs to keep comments like that from the press. Kills us with fans, season ticket holders, recruits, etc. Idiotic. Secondly, he wouldn't have said it if he didn't believe it was true and that's even more disturbing. We need to explain to those donors that A.) Our arch rivals are doing both, why not expect the same of our ourselves; B.) They are going to have donate A LOT OF $ personally to make up for empty seats and a disconnected donor base; C.) Once we're not embarrassing ourselves academically or off the field (top 3rd of Pac 12 in APR and Grad Rate), how can it not ALL be about winning?
