Alright, I took my day off from even thinking about recruiting yesterday (slept a bit more, ate some pizza, drank some beer, etc.), but now I'm back on the recruiting cycle. With 2019 being accelerated, I thought I'd start with a rough look at who they're losing as it stands now and how many they'd go after.
Current 2019 offer list
QB
Losing: Chase Forrest
Targeting: At least one, if not two
Wilcox said Wednesday that they'd be targeting a QB in 2019, which was already apparent. Depending on how numbers work and how the QB competition plays out, I'd guess they might take two this year.
Targets Now: Hank Bachmeier, Taulia Tagovailoa, Jayden Daniels, Grant Gunnell (a Texas A&M commit)
RB
Losing: Pat Laird
Targeting: Probably two
Cal currently has five scholarship RBs, they'd be a little more comfortable with six, so two more would bring it to that
Targets Now: Austin Jones, Sean Dollars, Zach Charbonnet, Jayvaun Wilson, George Holani, Steele Chambers (also possibly an OLB)
WR
Losing: Vic Wharton
Targeting: Probably two
While they're only losing Wharton, it's easy to see them wanting to bring in a couple taller receivers, something that they don't really have.
Targets now: Kyle Ford, Garrett Wilson, Mycah Pittman, Joe Ngata, Jacob Asa Turner, Jake Smith (expect more offers here)
TE/H-Back
Losing: Ray Hudson, Kyle Wells, Malik McMorris
Targeting: Two
You can't replace what McMorris does, but you can certainly add some extra height at the spot, which they're going to do
Targets now: Ethan Rae, Patrick Herbert, Brayden Liebrock, Jude Wolfe, Isaiah Foskey
OL
Losing: Patrick Mekari, Kam Bennett, Addison Ooms, Semisi Uluave
Targeting: Probably four
It's a good rule of thumb to take around four OL per class, and this class will be no different as it looks at the moment.
Targets Now: Ben Coleman, McKade Mettauer, Jason Rodriguez, Zachary Teter
DL
Losing: Chris Palmer
Targeting: At least two
I'm not entirely sure what the ideal number is for defensive linemen in a 3-4 (with 41 scholarships for each side of the ball, 3 for specialists), but a guess on that would be either 10 or 11. Two guys in 2019 would bring them to 10. This is where they need a nose tackle for the future.
Targets Now: Siale Liku, Braxten Croteau (who got a bump to 4-stars), Tymon Mitchell, Siaki Ika, Faatui Tuitele, Mase Funa, Hunter Spears, Ty Robinson, Troy Fautanu
OLB
Losing: Alex Funches
Targeting: At least one, probably two or three (with difference between pass rusher types and 'coin' LB/S hybrid types)
Cal's reloaded this position a ton this year, with Alftin, Tevis, and Ogunbanjo (Maybe Bickett). There's plenty of talent that they've offered here as well
Targets Now: Bru McCoy, Laiatu Latu, Josh Pakola, Lolani Langi, Ralen Goforth, Zach Zimos, Ryan Puskas, Mataio Soli,
ILB
Losing: Jordan Kunaszyk, Aisea Tongilava
Targeting: At least two
Again, they brought in three or four likely inside linebackers in Tattersall, Doughty, Bickett and Fatilua, but there's still plenty of talent at the position to look at and potentially bring in
Targets Now: Blake Antzoulatos, Maninoa Tufono, Jackson Hannah, Henry To'oto'o
DB
Losing: Quentin Tartabull, Derron Brown, possibly Trey Turner (I believe he redshirted this year, waiting on a roster update or confirmation on that, whatever comes first)
Targeting: Two or three at least
This is where some variation could come into play. They obviously felt they could have used another corner going into 2018. That didn't happen, so that's why I think they'll go with around three for this class.
Targets now: Isaiah Rutherford, Chris Steele, Jonathan McGill, DJ Turner II, Trent McDuffie, Jaxen Turner (Super Turnt guy, and a safety)
That comes out to a class of around 19 or 20, it'll probably be more. There's currently 19 spots or so open for the 2019 class if my math is right, so that seems about right.
Anyhow, with those down, let's take a look at some new offers from the past couple days that I haven't put up here
Grant Gunnell, QB
Only the second real pro-style QB they've offered this cycle. Looks like a firm commit to A&M for now, but he did commit under Sumlin, not Jimbo.
Steele Chambers RB/OLB/ATH
I lean more toward him being an OLB, but he shrugs off contact on the offensive side of the ball. By far the best name in the class.
Zachary Teter, OL
Another big kid, this one a relatively under the radar one from Florida. 6'5" and 290, moves well.
