MEN’S BASKETBALL:
Rabb Named to Wooden Watch List
Ivan Rabb Adds Wooden Recognition To His Naismith, Malone Preseason Watch List Honors
BERKELEY – The honors for sophomore forward Ivan Rabb continue to pile up, as Rabb was named to the Wooden Award preseason top 50 watch list revealed today.
Chosen by a preseason poll of national college basketball experts, the list is comprised of 50 student-athletes who are the early frontrunners for college basketball’s most prestigious individual honor. Rabb is one of seven Pac-12 student-athletes appearing on the list.
Rabb, who also appears on the Karl Malone Power Forward of the Year and Naismith Trophy watch lists, was tabbed an AP Preseason All-American earlier this month. While he has not made his sophomore debut due to a toe injury, Rabb earned second-team All-Pac-12 and Pac-12 All-Freshman laurels after a record-breaking rookie season that saw him set the school freshman record with 291 rebounds on the year. The Oakland, Calif. native ranked second in the conference and led the Golden Bears in field goal percentage (61.5 percent), rebounding (8.6 rebounds per game) and blocks (42). Rabb started all 34 contests, turning in 27 double-figure games.
Players on the preseason watch list are considered strong candidates for the 2017 John R. Wooden Award All-America Team presented by Wendy’s. Players not chosen to the preseason list are eligible for the Wooden Award midseason list, late season list and the national ballot. The national ballot consists of 15 top players who have proven to their universities that they are also making progress toward graduation and maintaining at least a cumulative 2.0 GPA. Nearly 1,000 voters will rank in order 10 of those 15 players. The Wooden Award All-American Team will be announced the week of the Elite Eight round of the NCAA Tournament, while the winner of the 2017 John R. Wooden Award will be announced during the ESPN College Basketball Awards Show presented by Wendy’s on April 7, 2017.
Rabb and the No. 25 Golden Bears continue a two-game season-opening homestand on Wednesday against UC Irvine. Tipoff is set for 8 p.m., live on Pac-12 Network with Roxy Bernstein and Ben Braun on the call.
