Thought since it's a relatively slow time, I could throw in some updates on spring sports, especially those who are succeeding like softball is at the moment, along with the fact that a number of Bears will be competing on the track, notably Ashtyn Davis, Malik McMorris, and CB Branden Smith, and on the baseball diamond with Derrick Clark.
Softball
To start, Cal softball came into today's matchup 10-0
They walked out of Moraga 11-0, with their fourth shutout of the year. They came into this one with an ERA of 0.65, so they've been strong on the mound this year. They head to Palm Springs for a five game stretch, starting with a doubleheader against UNC and Texas A&M
Baseball
Baseball started with three games down in San Diego to start Mike Neu's tenure. They went 1-2, beating San Diego 6-1 in their opener Friday, with Jared Horn going five scoreless and Aaron Shortridge going for a four inning save. Andrew Vaughn opened the scoring for the Bears in this one with an RBI in the bottom of the fifth to help Horn exit on a lead. Horn, as you might remember, was the only survivor (in his car) of a car crash, one that took the lives of his father, brother, and cousin, as they were hit by a drunk driver on I-80 back at the end of November. The Bears scored five in the 8th to get to their final score.
The Bears dropped both games of the doubleheader last Saturday, falling first to San Diego 11-8 due to a seven run seventh by the Torreros. Vaughn hit a pair of home runs, on his way to a five hit, five RBI outing. Jonah Davis also hit a homer early, alongside freshman Darren Baker, son of Dusty Baker, getting his first two hits. Cal then dropped the second game to Cincinatti, 3-1, as starter Matt Ladrech allowed all three runs in his four innings. Ladrech did strike out 7, a new career best.
They start a four game series against Cal State Bakersfield Friday night, with a doubleheader Saturday.
Track
The Bears have the MPSF Indoor Championships coming up on Friday and Saturday. Their last meet, the Husky Classic, had Ashtyn Davis winning in the 60m hurdles in 7.85 seconds. Branden Smith finished sixth in the 60m dash in 6.97 seconds. Smith also ran the 200 in 22.58 seconds (good for 18th). Some dude from the Academy of Art won both the 60m and the 200m races.
Other
Rugby murdered Arizona State by a final of 72-5 Monday, they have a home matchup against University of British Columbia on Saturday and another against USC right after. Women's swimming and diving is at the Pac-12 Championships, Men's swimming is starting theirs next week. Women's tennis is ranked 17th overall and facing the LA schools this weekend. Fun times.
