Hey guys, I was up at the Nor Cal Clash event today at Chabot College in Hayward. 2020 3-star center Dishon Jackson, who holds an offer from Cal was unable to play today, but there were four other 2020 players participating that Cal is eying. None of them have been offered at this time, though it should be noted that Coleman Hawkins visited earlier this summer. I have a separate interview with him coming your way. Below is a breakdown of what I saw from each player.
Dallas Rider (6’4” shooting guard from Moreau Catholic in Hayward): Nice form on his shot. Pretty fluid and quick release. Just needs to develop more confidence at the line. Capable of knocking down the open three. Catch and shoot. Has good court vision. Finds a cutting Coleman Hawkins for an easy bucket inside.
Robbie Beasley (6’1”, 170 pound 3-star point guard out of Dublin High School in Dublin): Pesky perimeter defender. Does a good job staying in front of his man. Pretty alert on defense. Handles the ball well. Able to make plays and find the cutting man for the easy finish. Not afraid to shoot it from deep. Shoots it a bit flat. Needs to improve his shot a bit to increase his percentages. Good burst to the rim. Knows how to push the ball for the easy layup. Needs to improve his handle a bit and court vision if he wants to succeed as a point guard at the next level. His poor shooting numbers don’t concern me too much. He needs to improve that aspect of his game, but the other pieces like defending and facilitating are definitely there.
Jhaylon Martinez (6’10” big man out of Vanden High School in Farefield): Moves well for a big man. Pretty light on his feet. Good shooting touch. Pretty active on the glass. Does a good job clearing space to grab the rebound. Has some meat on him. Has the size to bang in the paint at the next level. Soft hands. Pretty crafty around the rim. Knows how to finish in a variety of ways. Uses the glass well. Really good in the pick and roll. Should really thrive with a quality pass first point guard. He reminds me of a bigger version of Andre Kelly. His potential is really high.
Coleman Hawkins (6’8”, 210 pound 3-star power forward out of Prolific Prep in Napa): Confident to take the open three. Needs to add more arc to his shot. Shoots it a bit flat. Runs the floor really well. Handles the ball well for a big man. Capable of pushing the ball down the floor after a rebound. Has the tools to be a really good defender: He’s active in the paint, has really good length, and is pretty quick, able to defend both out on the perimeter and inside. Switches well. Very comfortable finishing inside. Just needs to improve his outside shooting. Does a good job cutting to the basket when it presents itself. Very quick for a guy of his size. Has good hands inside to catch and finish. Similar to Jhaylon, Hawkins has really high potential. He’s not as big as Martinez is, but he’s also leaner and a bit quicker/faster. So, it’s hard to say which of these two players has the higher ceiling.
Note: Hawkins told me today that he’ll be playing for Prolific Prep this season. He previously played for Antelope High School in Antelope, CA.
