Ten coaches were hired from outside their programs 3 seasons ago and I thought it would be interesting to look back on those hires and rank them as to who you think hired the best head coach for their program.

This board is a group that follows college football closely and I'm sure can add color, context and insight beyond the simple #'s I've provided.

NOTE: I did not include Mark Helfrich at Oregon as he was an internal promotion with little to no staff turnover, etc. Nor did I include Gary Anderson as he's no longer with Wisconsin

School: Record the two years prior: Coaches record year by year since ending with 2015 season

Colorado: 4-21: Mike Macintyre: 4-8, 2-10, 4-9

Boston College: 6-18: Steve Adazio: 7-6, 7-6, 3-9

Kentucky: 7-17: Mark Stoops: 2-10, 5-7, 5-7

California: 10-15: Sonny Dykes: 1-11, 5-7, 7-5

Tennessee: 10-14: Butch Jones: 5-7, 7-6, 8-4

Auburn: 11-14: Guz Malzahn: 12-2, 8-5, 6-6

Purdue: 13-13: Darell Hazell: 1-11, 3-9, 2-10

Texas Tech: 13-12: Kliff Kingsbury: 8-5, 4-8, 7-5

NC State: 15-11: Dave Doeren: 3-9, 8-5, 7-5

Arkansas: 15-10: Bret Bielema: 3-9, 7-6, 7-5

Any of these guys you wish were our HC in 2016? How would you rank the schools in terms of quality of the hires based on what you know about them over the past three years.

Couple things of note:

- 7 of the ten coaches had losing seasons in year one with 5 of those winning 3 or less
- The one who hit the gate running was Guz Malzahn with a NC game appearance yet has since leaked oil
- Strictly in terms of wins and losses, only Butch Jones and Sonny Dykes have year over year improvement
- 6 of the coaches got their teams bowl eligible this year, 7 overall have had their teams bowl eligible at least once
- The two programs who were in the best shape (as measured by previous two season W's and L's) had coaches who both went 3-9 in year one (Arkansas and NC State)
- Only one coach who inherited a team that did not bowl the two years prior took their team to a bowl in year one - Steve Adazio
