Jon wilner has just written an extensive piece on the hiring of Mike Williams. Here are his major points. 1) Williams was Dirks' choice all along. 2) He gave no background on why the "process" took so long . 3) Williams has been very popular among the student-athletes. 4) There is a small but vocal faction who claim that the hiring of Williams proves that Dirks doesn't care about athletics. ( after all, Williams'resume was probably as thin as any AC candidate in the country)5) If Williams "bombs", Dirks is going to look awfully bad. 6) Williams supposedly has not made any missteps during the interim process. 7) Williams does have a financial background which supposedly will stand him in good stead as he begins his AD journey. 8) Williams is uniquely positioned to bridge the tremendous cultural gap between administrators, faculty and the entire athletic culture. ( supposedly he has been making strides in this area. 9) the gap between the non-athletic and the athletic culture at Cal is so wide and deep that it will take Williams , or any other AD for that matter,. years- perhaps decades to bridge the gap. Wilner concludes by saying that the task is almost impossible given the history of the cultures but that Williams deserves every chance. We shall see!!!
