Ivan Rabb on Friday’s scrimmage: “Yeah, tomorrow we have a little scrimmage. I think it will be really fun just to show fans what we’ve been working on for the past couple of months and the progress that we’ve made since Australia. I’m really excited just to finally be able to play. It’s not necessarily a real game, but it’s just some excitement that we can give to the fans in the Cal community.”
Ivan Rabb on how the team is looking: “So far the team, I mean, we’re coming together. Our chemistry is really improved, we’re starting to learn each other’s hot spots, and we’re playing together, I mean, what else can I say? We’re defending at a high level, we’re rebounding at a high level, and we just want to continue to grow everyday.”
Jaylen Brown on being a leader on this Cal team as a freshman: “That’s a good question. I think we’ve been learning a lot from the guys that you just mentioned. They’ve been teaching us a lot. We are freshmen, so, we are walking into this for the first time, so, we have a lot to learn, it’s like a professor walking into a new class, they’re teaching us new things every day, so we’re just trying to soak up as much as possible and follow like the older guys lead like Tryone. Jabari, J-Mat, etc.”
Ivan Rabb on being a leader on this Cal team as a freshman: “Yeah, I agree with him as well. Even though we’re freshmen, they also realize that there’s stuff that they can learn from us as well. So, I mean, we kinda just bounce ideas off each other and just see what works. At the end of the day, we’re all going for the same goal. We want to win games, so whatever we can do as freshmen, me, Jaylen, and Roman to learn from the older guys is what we’ll do every day.”
Jaylen Brown on Real Talk sessions: “It’s definitely great. It’s a counter space that we get to encounter outside of basketball and outside of the real world. It’s a place where we can be ourselves and speak on topics in our own voice and it’s just a great way to interact with each other and bounce ideas that have something to do with the world and things like that.”
Ivan Rabb on Real Talk sessions: “I also enjoy the time because it’s time where we just be honest with each other. It’s all family in the room. We don’t have to worry about our conversations getting out to the public, so anything that’s on our mind any way that we want to answer certain questions, we can just be really honest and just tell the truth about exactly how we feel and our opinions.”
Jaylen Brown on the biggest adjustment from high school basketball to college basketball: “The biggest adjustment is the little things. The little things that count much more than maybe you can get away with in high school. In high school, you can use your athleticism to get by or in a lot of things in college, everybody’s to the athleticism that you are, so the little things get exposed a lot more, so me and Ivan, we both had to clean up on a lot of the little things that are fundamentally things that we got to get away with in high school because we were just a little bit better than everybody else.”
Ivan Rabb on the biggest adjustment from high school basketball to college basketball: “Another thing I would add to that is the speed of the game. Everything that you do has to be full speed, it has to be full effort. So, I mean, you won’t make an impact on the game. When you’re cutting to the basket, you have to cut with your eyes on the basketball. You’re not doing anything lazy. That’s the first thing I noticed as soon as I got here. Everything has to be full effort. Especially if you want to win games. It’s easy to be lackadaisical. But it’s a lot harder to go hard every possession.”
Ivan Rabb on Tyrone Wallace’s leadership and his return: “Yeah, I think it meant a lot. I think he saw potential in the program. He believed in what we could do for this upcoming season and I really appreciate that. I’m also proud of him for finishing off his college career in the classroom as well as the basketball court. I think that him being one of the leaders of this team, he can take us really far and like I said, I’m really proud of him and I want to keep pushing every day.”
Jaylen Brown on what he’s learned about Ivan Rabb: “ I didn’t know he was funny. This guy is a comedian. At least he thinks he is. Ivan Rabb, he is probably one of the hardest workers that I know, like you just throw the ball down to him and you can expect like, you don’t know what to expect, he’s so versatile down low. He can take you off the bounce, he can shoot the ball, I mean, that stuff that you might probably didn’t even get to experience as much in the all-star game setting because there’s certain things that everybody has to do when you’re playing in that type of role but just getting to see him every day, I didn’t realize how talented and special he could be.”
Ivan Rabb on being a comedian: “I’m the closest thing to a comedian on the team.”
