A few key points:
Defense
- Must do a better job defensively
- We need to get off the field on 3rd downs. That's the "money down"
- Rice was 13 of 21 on 3rd down. Need to stop them
- Need to get a fourth Texas DL guy getting a pass rush
- Can't let a team really attack us down the middle
- Frustrating thing is we're not making a team one-dimensional at all
- Lot of missed tackles and sacks
- Need better fundamentals and technique
- We're not winning on first downs (letting opposing teams getting too many yards)
- Need to win more 1on1's on the LOS
- "If you are playing to win, you have to win on defense first" (Coach Strong is a 'defense coach')
Offense
- Was pleased with Jerrod Heard. He can beat people with his feet
- Why didn't you start Jerrod earlier? He wasn't ready
- We need consistency
- Telling Jerrod "stay focused and locked in"
- Swoopes is a competitor; he'll get more opportunities
Overall
- Lots of room for improvement; work on fundamentals
- Need to get better. "no where close to where we should be"
Comments on Cal
- Really incredible Cal team
- Can throw the ball around, up tempo
- Their QB can make all the throws
- Our hands will be full
- They score a LOT of points. Can we match that score with our offense?
- Goff: We hope we can keep him corralled (not run around). He sits in the pocket, need to keep him in front of us. Can't let him have too much time
- Goff: He has height, makes the difficult throws, we can't give him a window. Need to get pressure, make him move and be uncomfortable
- Ball control changes? Texas going to try and run the ball against Cal
- Air Raid? Dykes added the run piece. Run/pass option. Makes it hard on our defense, have to cover both run and pass
