BERKELEY – The California women’s basketball team will once again test itself against some of the top teams in the nation this season, as head coach Charmin Smith unveiled the Golden Bears’ non-conference schedule for the 2019-20 campaign.
The Golden Bears’ 11-game non-conference slate consists of eight games at Haas Pavilion, highlighted by games against SEC contenders Arkansas (Nov. 24) and Kentucky (Dec. 21). Cal’s schedule features opponents from nine different conferences, including 2019 Final Four participant UConn. The full 2019-20 non-conference schedule can be found here.
“This 2019-2020 season is all about building on the foundation established here at Cal,” said Smith, who is entering her first season as head coach of the Golden Bears, but 13th season overall in Berkeley. “I’m looking forward to returning to Boston - the city where my coaching career started - as we tip off the new season. Our schedule affords us the opportunity to play opponents from nine different conferences which will expose us to different styles of play, new game plans, and will definitively prepare us for competition in the Pac-12, one of the best conferences in the country.”
Cal fans will be able to get their first look at the 2019-20 squad with a pair of exhibition games at Haas Pavilion. The Bears will host Chinese squad Beijing Normal University on Sunday, October 27, before taking on Vanguard on Sunday, November 3, in their final tune-up before officially starting the 2019-20 season.
Coach Smith and the Bears begin the new season on the road, opening the year on November 8 at Harvard. Following the contest with the Crimson, the Bears head to Connecticut, taking on perennial power UConn on November 10. This marks the third game in a four-year home-and-home between Cal and UConn. The schools opened the series in Storrs, Connecticut in November 2017 while the most recent matchup saw the top-ranked Huskies come away with a 76-66 victory in front of a record crowd of 10,818 at Haas Pavilion on December 22.
Following the trip out east, the Bears will take on UC Riverside on November 17, in their home opener at Haas Pavilion. Cal returns to the road for a midweek contest at San Diego State (Nov. 21), hosting Arkansas at Haas Pavilion on November 24. The Razorbacks are coming off a 22-15 season in which they reached the third round of the WNIT, and are led by head coach Mike Neighbors, who spent four seasons as the head coach at Washington before returning to his alma mater in 2017.
The Cal Classic returns to Haas Pavilion on November 29 and 30, as the Bears welcome North Carolina Central, Long Beach State, and Penn State. The first day features matchups between Cal and NC Central, and Penn State and Long Beach. The Eagles are led by a familiar face in head coach Trisha Stafford-Odom, who graduated from Cal in 1992 and was an All-Pac-10 and All-America selection for the Bears. Stafford-Odom helped the Bears to their first NCAA Tournament appearances in 1990 and 1992, and was enshrined in the Cal Athletics Hall of Fame in 2013.
Following the Cal Classic, the Bears continue their homestand with matchups against Boston University (Dec. 7), Santa Clara (Dec. 14), and Kentucky (Dec. 21). Cal and Kentucky last met during the 2017-18 season, a 62-52 win for the Bears in Lexington. The Wildcats are coming off a 25-8 season in which they finished fourth in the SEC and reached the Second Round of the NCAA Tournament.
Following a brief break for the holidays, the Bears will close out the non-conference at home, hosting Grand Canyon University at Haas Pavilion on December 29.
Game times for all contests will be announced at a later date, once television agreements are finalized, along with the full 2019-20 Pac-12 schedule.
