Full release:

BERKELEY –The California men’s basketball team will face Virginia on Dec. 22, 2015 as part of a two-game series with the Cavaliers, announced by both schools on Monday.

Cal and UVA, a member of the Atlantic Coast Conference, will play at Paul Jones Arena in Charlottesville, Va. on Tuesday, Dec. 22, 2015 in front of a national television audience on ESPN2. The Golden Bears and Cavaliers will meet at Haas Pavilion in Berkeley in 2016.

Cal and Virginia have previously never met on the hardwood.

The Bears’ last game against a team from the ACC (at the time the game was played) was on Nov. 23, 2012. They defeated Georgia Tech, 68-57, in the semifinals en route to the championship of the DirecTV Classic at the Anaheim Convention Center in Anaheim, Calif.

Dec. 22, 2015 will be Cal’s first game in the state of Virginia since the Bears competed in the 1991 Central Fidelity Classic in Richmond, Va. They split their two games in the tournament with a 99-76 setback to LaSalle on Nov. 29, 1991 and a 68-59 victory over Virginia Tech on Nov. 30, 1991.

The Golden Bears’ full 2015-16 non-conference schedule will be announced at a later date.

Cal begins official practices for its Australia tour on Tuesday, Aug. 4 on campus in Berkeley. The Bears will visit Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane during a four-game exhibition tour Aug. 13-24.

Cal returns three starters, including First Team All-Pac-12 selection and 2015 Bob Cousy Award Finalist Tyrone Wallace. The Golden Bears bring back four of their top five scorers overall, along with their top rebounder and assist leader from an 18-win team in 2014-15. Wallace heads into his senior season as one of the Pac-12’s active leaders in career scoring with nearly 1,200 points. The point guard was the lone individual in the conference to finish in the top-five in the league in points (17.1 ppg.), rebounds (7.1 rpg.) and assists (4.0). He is joined by returning veterans in junior guards Jabari Bird (10.5 ppg. last season), Jordan Mathews (13.6 ppg. last season). Cal also welcomes the addition of the nation’s second-ranked recruiting class, which features First Team High School All-Americans Jaylen Brown and Ivan Rabb and Los Angeles are standout Roman Davis. The Bears, under second-year head coach Cuonzo Martin, return an experienced lineup overall as they usher in a new-look Haas Pavilion that underwent and extensive $10 million renovation in the off-season. A new high definition video board, along with new sound and lighting systems will enhance the fan experience this coming season.
