Hey guys, I am currently reading a book called "Basketball Drills, Plays, and Strategies" by Clinton M. Adkins, Steven R. Bain, Edward A. Dreyer, and Robert A. Starkey. It is a legit book. Something I read in there talked about the difference between motion offenses and set offenses in terms of the pros and cons. Pros of a motion offense is that they make your team hard to scout and they allow your players to react to the defense, which works very well against zone. Cons of a motion offense is that they take time to learn and are hard to get down. Pros of a set offense is that they are simple to learn and when executed properly can be just as effective as a motion offense. Cons of a set offense is that they make your team easy to scout and without proper execution, it can lead to lots of turnovers and allow inferior teams to hang around.
Does the last one not sound like Cal? Cal is running a set offense (probably more accurate to say flex offense, see my comment below), but the aren't running it very well. What this means is that they are incredibly easy to scout and opponents know what's coming. They know what Cal will do against a zone, etc. If Cal is able to execute their offense the way it's supposed to, they'll be fine. But so long as they don't and they let the zone lull them into lots of threes, they'll continue to struggle. Anyways, I thought this was interesting and very applicable to what's going on with the Cal men's basketball team right now.
