Decision date: DE/OLB Jaeden Moore

Announcement: Aug. 17; 2:15 p.m. PDT
Finalists: Cal, Arizona, Oregon, Washington

Longtime priority edge rusher target Jaeden Moore has quickly shifted gears and will now make a decision this week after previously indicating that he would wait until the fall to announce his commitment. That means Oregon will be the last school to get him on a visit before his decision after the other finalists hosted him on official visits in June. He did not take an official visit to Oregon but made an unofficial visit to Eugene a couple weeks ago for that program's Saturday Night Live camp. The Ducks have gained momentum since then leading to plenty of speculation that Oregon will be the pick this week. The Bears have definitely put a lot of effort into keeping Moore close to home, but he has been open to all the schools in pursuit and has taken his time to get to know each one. He has been good about not tipping his hand, so there's no real surprises at this stage. However, it does feel like Oregon is sitting in the best spot heading into his announcement.

The Pac-12 released its weekly pairings rotation for the upcoming conference season. Cal will host USC to open league play on Nov. 30 before traveling to Arizona on Dec. 4. After that, the Bears will open the traditional 18-game conference slate with home games against Colorado and Utah. Cal will close the regular season on the road against the Oregon schools.

Saturday (Aug. 13) scrimmage observations

I was able to attend the scrimmage this morning.

Before I get into the details, the obvious caveats apply: it is only a single practice, I’m not an experienced football analyst (just a long-standing Cal football season ticket holder), and it is really hard to track everything going on. Shout-out to Jessie, who does an amazing job tracking stats and players for all the practices. I probably got some of the details wrong (hard to see jersey numbers sometimes, but the big picture is hopefully directionally right). My main focus was on watching the Cal offense.

I was there for most of the scrimmage and saw 12 offensive drives. It was 11-on-11, starting on the offense’s 35 yard line, in full pads, but no real tackling to the ground (refs would blow the plays dead with a whistle). If the offense didn’t convert on 3rd downs, the drive ended (no punts) or a FG was attempted if in range.

Jack Plummer and Kai Millner had the vast majority of the snaps, taking turns after each drive was complete. The order and the results were:
  1. 1st drive: Plummer, marched down field resulting in a FG
  2. 2nd drive: Millner, pick 6 on the first play
  3. 3rd drive: Millner, turnover on downs
  4. 4th drive: Plummer, moved down the field resulting in TD pass
  5. 5th drive: Millner, turnover on downs
  6. 6th drive: Millner, moved down field resulting in FG
  7. 7th drive: Plummer, moved down field resulting in FG
  8. 8th drive: Millner, turnover on downs
  9. 9th drive: Millner, turnover on downs
  10. 10th drive: Plummer, gained 30-35 yards…but coaches stopped the drive and had a long FG attempt
  11. 11th drive: Millner, gained 30-35 yards …but coaches stopped the drive and had a long FG attempt
  12. 12th drive: Zach Johnson, pick 6 on the first play
  13. Later drives: Johnson went again, followed by Mendoza (at this point I left)

Bottom line: of the 12+ drives, only one resulted in a TD.

In the next few posts I’ll offer some observations…

Official stats from the scrimmage

From Cal:

Jack Plummer took all of the No. 1 reps at quarterback and led the offense to points in each of his four possessions at the helm. Plummer finished 18-of-22 for 171 yards with one touchdown and no interceptions with his touchdown toss on a 20-yard strike to Mavin Anderson. Dario Longhetto capped each of the other three drives with field goals from 22, 23 and 48 yards out. Plummer's primary targets were Jeremiah Hunter (3-46), J.Michael Sturdivant (3-36) and Anderson (3-32, TD), while Damien Moore (7-28) got the bulk of the running back reps with the top offense.

Ethan Saunders was the most productive player from the No. 1 defense with four tackles, 2.0 tackles for loss (-4 yards), 1.0 sack (-2 yards) and one quarterback hurry.

The No. 1 units were in for approximately 70 of the day's 94 plays.

Kai Millner (13-of-17, 116 yards, 1 INT) quarterbacked the No. 2 offensive unit, while Fernando Mendoza (4-of-7, 14 yards) took most of the quarterback reps with the No. 3 offense. Mendoza also had one of the most memorable moments of the day when the Bears went fully live on the final play of the workout and Mendoza eluded several rushers before finding Kenden Robinson Jr. in the back of the end zone to convert a played designated as a two-point conversion. Ashton Stredick had the game's only rushing touchdown on a 40-yarder for the No. 3 offense while adding three catches for seven yards, while Jaydn Ott had a game-high five catches for 42 yards out of the backfield working with the No. 2 offense as well as two rushes for six yards. Other receivers with multiple catches including Tommy Christakos, who had three receptions for a game-high 47 yards, Grant Daley (3-35) and Mason Starling (2-29).
Both the No. 2 and No. 3 defenses had a pick six with Isaiah Young returning a Millner pass 36 yards for a score and McKyle So'oto intercepting Zach Johnson and running 38 yards for a touchdown. The defense also spent a lot of the day in the offensive backfield with 13.0 team tackles for loss and 8.0 sacks.

The Bears will have Sunday off before returning to fall camp on Monday to continue preparation for the team's 2022 season that begins against UC Davis at FTX Field at California Memorial Stadium on Saturday, Sept. 3 (1:00 p.m. PT, Pac-12 Bay Area).

Today

Jesse was not able to cover practice today, heads up. He tried to get his HS team's practice moved, but they only had access to the field in a certain window today. I tried some other leads to get someone out there and was legit considering driving up myself to cover it, but I needed to be on the road by 4 a.m. and didn't wake up until 5:30 today.

So direct all frustration and other sentiments at me. I think we may have an option in place now for any future needs this month (just wasn't an option today). And if Saturdays remain a conflict for Jesse the rest of this month, I will come up and do it. Just need to commit to that sooner so I can get on the road Friday night.

I'll be writing a full story off the post-practice interviews today (and still working on another story on the RBs).
