Interviewed Jonah Leaea last night

Drove to Vegas (and back) last night for Mater Dei-Bishop Gorman. Talked to Jonah Leaea afterward and will have story up later today. Got home 4 hours ago so still moving slow. Have to go to a bday party across town at 1 for my Goddaughter (critics say I'm the best Godfather since Brando so I have a rep to uphold). And then I'm writing around the clock the rest of the weekend, including content for here.

Last night was a scramble with the Vegas back and forth, so I forgot to post the Peter Sirmon interview. Will throw it in a thread now.

Mandel has cal going 5-7. Says cal is "trending down"

Tier 1: Defending champion Utah, recent two-time champion Oregon, Lincoln Riley-makeover USC and highly experienced UCLA.

Tier 2: Oregon State, Washington State and Washington, three mid-tier programs I could see winning anywhere from five to nine games.

Tier 3: Arizona, Stanford and Cal, the first one digging itself up, the other two trending down.

Tier 4: Colorado and Arizona State, both of which seem rudderless at the top and in danger of hitting rock bottom as a result.

Bball recruit - 4* Carey Booth

I saw on a different site that 4* Booth out of Brewster Academy took an OV to Cal on July 30th. I believe he’s the son of former Penn State star Calvin Booth. For those of you that don’t remember the name, Calvin has a Cal tattoo since his college days. He’s a Penn St lean which is probably due to his familiarity with the school/program.

@Ryan Young , can you look into this? Curious where Cal stands in his recruitment.

I’m with @ayetee11 regarding Fox. Each recruiting class has been better than the last. Starting off with a 4* for the’23 is a great start.

Garbers v Plummer

I’m watching 2021 games, and seeing Garbers vs Oregon and Colorado and Oregon State has me remembering why I loved Garbers. I think we are gonna miss some of his intangibles and his guts and definitely the option plays and the scrambling.

But then watching UW and TCU and UCLA reveals the frustrations with short yard passes and outs into the flat. And poor decision making.

I do wonder whether Plummer would have had much success last year as well. Seems doubtful.

Our WRs and TEs, combined with Ott in the backfield, are (hopefully) going to give us more explosiveness. Alternatively, what happens if Garbers has a WR room with more separation?

Watching these games and seeing Hunter all season — and Latu in Colorado especially — makes me wonder why we didn’t give all our frosh talent more snaps.

Jack Plummer and ND game

Now that the season is drawing near, I went back and watched the Purdue vs ND game on youtube. It can be found here for those interested.

Plummer gets pulled with about 8 minutes to go in the 4th quarter. There were a few things I learned from watching the replay. Plummer has been starting games at Purdue in every season since 2019. He brings a pretty good amount of experience. He isn't a great runner or a threat on a read option but he did scramble for at least one first down in the game. The Purdue oline in that game was dominated. They struggled to protect in pass pro and weren't good in short yardage either. That created problems for Plummer in trying to do anything but complete quick outs, stops, and screens. Milton Wright at receiver had a pretty ugly game, too. Kyle Hamilton was all over the field for ND. No wonder he was an early draft pick.

I'd be curious what @RugBear thinks about the Purdue oline play, and how that translates to our oline (other than specifically not getting man-handled)? Also would be curious to hear what @jessestewart thinks from a play calling perspective of how Brohm game-planned and what Cal would do. Perhaps a mailbag item for ND week?

How Cal's commits fared on the field last week

Here's the requested roundup. We'll do it each week -- rather quiet Week 1 for Cal commits, but a huge game from TE Ben Marshall!

(Today is my birthday and I basically took yesterday off to celebrate with friends, going to a Dodgers game and dinner. Apologies on the delay with this.)

Roster and 2 deep?

I feel like Wilcox had previously released the two deep after the second scrimmage. Is that gonna happen this year?

anyone who’s been watching interested in taking a crack at it? This is my impression based on attending 2 scrimmages, reading Jesse's incredible practice reports, and previous info.
