Must Read: Scouting Kanawai Noa

Must read for a couple reasons: 1) I don't think Marc or I were very high on pulling a receiver out of Hawaii, and 2) we are both now very high on pulling a receiver out of Hawaii.

Also a side note on Noa: I talked to a source at Washington State who said the Cougars are really pissed they didn't beat out Cal for Noa. They thought he was a faster version of River Cracraft, you know, the kid who had 11 catches for 172 yards and 3 TDs against Cal.

Anyway, make sure you read this...

Cal's Draft Eligible WRs

The deadline to declare of the NFL Draft is Jan. 15, and per a source with knowledge of the situation, the one draft eligible WR amongst juniors Bryce Treggs, Chris Harper, and Trevor Davis, and redshirt sophomore Kenny Lawler who is for sure staying as of tonight is Trevor Davis.

We'd be surprised if Treggs or Lawler left, but as of right now, Davis is the only one who guaranteed isn't going anywhere. More in this thread as we hear it...

The warriors

Just thought of something amid the well deserved gloom and doom. Every recruit pursued by CM will have the wonderful added bonus of watching the terrific Warriors with their new coach either next door in Oakland or along the waterfront in S.F. Let's see----- I can go to Cal and watch the Warriors play for four years or I can go to Kansas and watch re-runs of the Wizard of Oz for four years?? Gee---- just a tough choice!! Rejoice long suffering Cal fans--- the emergence of the Warriors will land several recruits over the next few years. Or am I smoking something illegal??

Ivan Rabb

I haven't seen much posted about Rabb's official visit to Arizona this weekend, i was reading some other schools boards and it sounds like Arizona doesn't feel it made up much ground on Cal with this visit. Its basically a 3 team race between Arizona, Cal, and UK, with Cal being the favorite still. Rabb has a OV set to UCLA on the 31st but it doesn't sound like they are a threat at all.

Interesting note one of the posters said that Ivan has told his mom he will stay in college for 2 years unless he is guranteed to be a top 3 pick in the NBA draft. He is also pretty tight with Frayer so that's good news.

Also a couple names menitoned that Cal leads for Jordan Ford, and Christian Terrell.

Bball talent level

I have great hopes for Martin. However I'm having a difficult time judging his work so far. The team's offense is atrocious to watch. Is that a function of style of play, ability to motivate, player rotation or skill level?

I've been a very close observer of Cal basketball since 1985. I've played a lot including semi-pro in Sweden and on Cal's club team (which was tons of fun but not particularly serious), so I have a decent understanding of talent, schemes etc.

I can unequivally say that this team without Bird has the least talent I've seen on any Cal team. That's not to disparage anyone on the team because all have specific skills and are d1 players for sure (except one in my opinion) but the collection of talent is quite poor. Athleticism is well below D1 average. Size and rebounding is below average. Shooting is well below average. Depth is non existant. Ball handling is below average. Defensive intensity is the only aspect I can see that is above average for a D1 team. With Bird, I would still consider this to be among the least talented teams I've seen at Cal.

Based on that assessment I suppose I have some relief that Martin is doing well. His cards aren't strong and he didn't add any meaningful pieces (for this year). Recruiting will be paramount as many have stated and adding Rooks and Domingo and Bird will help. But we need a major upgrade in athleticism especially given the focus on defense and transition scoring. Our half court game is painful to watch and the current athleticism isn't conducive to rebounding and getting out on breaks nor do we create enough turnovers.

Possible 2015 recruit

I'm told by a good source that Cuonzo Martin will be watching small forward Roderick Williams of Los Angeles (Calif.) Price this evening. We actually have Williams ranked in our 2016 Rivals150 because he is young for his class (turns 17 in the summer I believe) and the plan has always been to send him off for a year of prep school after he graduates this spring. However, starting to look like he's going to go 2015 so Cal is doing their due diligence here.

Athletic kid, fills the lane in transition, gets on glass. Very good defender with improving perimeter skills.

USC/UCLA TRIP

Starts tonight. Last year our season literally started going south on this same trip. Both teams had a prettty rough start to the conference season this past week. Are these Cal wins? I hope so but I would not bet on it. Not after losing to CSUB and WSU, both of whom are probably worse. WSU really exposed our weakness. USC has 2 big Serbs and you can expect them to exploit Behrens and Kravish. Just like WSU did. It will take really big games by Wallace and Mathews and some kind of comeback by Kravish to have a chance. A poor shooting night and we lose again.

OT: Why you don't threaten the press (at least not in the U.S.)

Grant's commentary bummed me out a bit, so I went looking for some comic relief. And found it.

A Frederick Md. county council member (one Kirby Delauter) warns the local newspaper not to use his name without his permission, and threatens to SUE THEM if they don't.

Read the following link to see what the newspaper did in the face of this threat:

Cal RB's in the NFL playoffs

I know everyone on this board is aware of this already, but nice to see it actually written up in the media (hopefully it is okay to link a CBS Sports article).

It talks about Lynch, Forsett, Vereen, and Anderson (4 of the 8 starting RB's still in the NFL playoffs) all coming from Cal.

Congrats to these former bears (and Coach Gould)...

Elite coaches?

Ok, I thought why not stir up some stuff. It's the New Year after all, and the current posts don't seem to be going anywhere, so here goes. Urban Meyer an elite coach? Geez, he could hardly get out of his way in the final couple of minutes. In the second to last series (I think anyway. Didn't have it recorded) the announcers specifically mentioned how the QB should run the clock down before he had it snapped. Nope. Snapped it with 15 second left. Then when they get the ball back after the onside kick, they throw a long pass giving Alabama hope. Can't remember exactly how many seconds they took on their 4 plays, but it was only a little over 20. Boom. Alabama gets the ball with a fair amount of time but no timeouts. Ok, they won, but if that Hail Mary had connected, the time management at the end of the game would have been reviewed and OSU coaches would have been killed. If you combine both the 15 seconds and the amount of time they gave back on the incomplete pass, Alabama would have gotten the ball back with so little time, they would have had no chance.

Oh, then there's the OSU DC looking around to check and see if it's ok to call a timeout. Too late. Alabama scored.

So even elite coaches can get it wrong.
