Big 6-foot-5 Snow College (Ephraim, Utah) receiver Marquis Montgomery is visiting Cal this weekend. The high three-star prospect recently included the Bears on his top 5 list over the weekend along with Oregon, Penn State, LSU and Texas A&M. Cal has been active in his recruitment as of late including having Burl Toler out for an in-home visit with him last week. USF stopped by last week and Arizona made a stop at the school yesterday.

Spring football/showcase

Cal has announced its start and end dates for spring football practice this year. The Bears will open up spring ball on March 11 and end it exactly five weeks later on April 15 with the annual Cal Football Spring Showcase. It's all free to attend and is expected to be open to the public.

The IN-DEPTH Mike Bloesch/OL feature

I'm late, acknowledged. I just couldn't get into a writing rhythm yesterday. It happens sometimes. No excuses offered, and no, I don't want to set that tone for 2023. Took me longer to recover from all the travel than I thought, and here we are -- I hope this will prove worth the wait. It's a combination feature on Mike Bloesch and also Bloesch/Spavital's thoughts on what they have and need to do with the OL.

Tim Plough story is done ... waiting on photo

All I have is a photo of him at Boise State -- Cal's sports information dept said it could get me something. So that's the wait for now -- story is done and saved. I started with Plough, will do Bloesch tomorrow. Have at least four coming. I fly back from Hawaii on a red eye tonight, driving around the island the rest of the day to check out the sights. As soon as photo comes in I'll post story.

Offer strategy

I'm curious why some highly rated HS players are offered. I've seen a lot of offers from Cal to different players the last week or so, and I realize that they always offer more players then they will realistically get to commit. But some HS stars have 20 to 30 power 5 offers, from the Big 10 and the SEC. The kid sets a date to narrow the list to 8, say, and after he has done so, I'll see a Cal offer to the kid. Do they talk to the kid and get a sense that Cal realistically has a shot? Or do they just have a big board with talented kids (maybe with decent gpa's) and throw offers at them hoping they get lucky? Seems like some of these offers have no chance of being accepted.

Cal's and UCLA's Comparative Financial Status

This article by Jon Wilner is fascinating. It seems that Cal athletics survives only thanks to the generosity of the University and Chancellor Christ. That may explain why the University/Carol has so much input in the decisions that are made by Cal's Athletic Department, as its major "investor".

New 2024 DL offer Caleb Mitchell Irving planning spring visit

Dallas-area junior defensive lineman Caleb Mitchell Irving was offered by Cal last night, and the coveted 2024 prospect is already set up to visit the Bears in March for the team's big junior day. It will be his first visit of the new year since he doesn't plan on taking any trips this month. There's a dead period all of February, so Cal will be the first one to leave an impression on him before he makes a string of visits in March and then later near the summer.

He's intrigued by the pitch from the Bears right now and his building a solid relationship with Andrew Browning.

"So far he seems like a pretty well-rounded, down-to-earth guy," Irving said of his lead recruiter. "I like a coach who has a player's back, and he definitely seems like a coach who will have each one of his players' back. He just likes to talk ball, which is really cool.

"He's real big on the little things. That's what I really like about him."
