The Stanford Daily (Kevin Jing)- Ranking the 15 best football players from Stanford and Cal

Read that here.

Curious to get your guys’ thoughts on the list. Someone on the Stanford site posted this on our board.

Note: A Cal player was named #1.

A few notable Senior Day walkers

These were the walkers per Cal PR.

Notably, the following players with eligibility left after this season and who are contributors participated in senior day: Driscoll, Session, Hunter, Woodson, Rohme.

Of course, walking doesn’t preclude anyone from coming back. And in this day and age, it’s probably a wise move to walk because you never know what offer you might get after the season. But hopefully all of these guys come back on 2024.

Five Takeaways: Cal coaching staff talks identity ahead Big Game

Saturday, Cal got its first win since September and now turns its attention to one of the biggest weeks of the year: the Big Game. Cal (4-6, 2-5 Pac-12) and Stanford (3-7, 2-6 Pac-12) are both looking to add more wins to their respective records as they gear up for the 126th edition of the Bay Area rivalry game.

Ahead of this week’s matchup, Cal head coach Justin Wilcox, alongside with defensive coordinator Peter Sirmon and offensive coordinator Jake Spavital, talked about the upcoming Big Game and provided the media with team updates and observations from the Washington State win after having an opportunity to review the game film.

Here are the five takeaways from Tuesday’s media availability:

MBB game thread: Cal vs. CSU Bakersfield

GAME DETAILS

Cal (1-1) vs. Cal State Bakersfield (1-1)
Time: 7 p.m. PT
Location: Berkeley, California | Haas Pavilion
Watch: Pac-12 Network (Bay Area) | Roxy Bernstein (PxP) & Don Maclean (Analyst)
Listen: 810 AM & The Varsity App | Justin Allegri (PxP) & Theo Robertson (Analyst)

The Bears will look to bounce back Monday night as they welcome CSU Bakersfield to Haas tonight. The Roadrunners head into the matchup with one win and one loss after falling to No. 21 USC last week at Galen Center. Cal has had a couple challenging games so far to open the season and will be looking to get back on the winning side Monday night.

Join the conversation and follow along for updates throughout the game.

Looking for a Big Game ticket or two

anybody selling tickets? looking for something cheap... just want to be able to get in the stadium if the opportunity presents itself. Will be bringing my 13 month old to the tailgate... have no idea if he'll last until kickoff or not. wife is working that evening and would be able to attend the first quarter at the most.

can't remember, do you just pay for parking when you get there? how early does it fill up (if it does at all)? I hear there's no stroller parking/check in at furd stadium? Anybody with any toddler-related intel I'd love to hear it.

A win is a win: Cal rediscovers joy after nail-biting victory

After a four-week drought, Cal football finally managed to secure a win. “Secure” may be too strong of a word to use in this situation, though — at times, it seemed like the win came off the coattails of luck, Pac-12 magic and complete and utter chaos.

After all, this was the last Pac-12 home game for the Bears, so chaos was almost a prerequisite. But, a win is a win. And wins matter.

It’s not often that you see college athletes enjoying media availability. But Saturday, the players were truly having fun — and it showed.

Jimbo Fisher out at TAMU

The comedy writes itself… apparently they thought they had to do this since most of their high priced mercenaries are on their way out the door. Their horrible contract requires a 20% payout within 30 days with the remainder split evenly over the term paid annually. So $19m. And change up front and $7.3m a year for 8 years. Add in they just gave 1 year extensions to most of the staff (like 3 weeks ago) and that’ll be another $8-10m they need to pay off. Amazing…

Also, the contract has no offsets so TAMU gets no relief if Jimbo gets another job.

Lot of talent about to be on the open market… GET THOSE CHECKBOOKS OUT haha

Pac-12 weekly honors for Cade Uluave and Brian Driscoll

Cal wins half of the weekly Pac-12 conference awards today as linebacker Cade Uluave is named the Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Week and the Freshman of the Week while center Brian Driscoll picked up his second Pac-12 Offensive Lineman of the Week award today for their performances against Washington State in Saturday's win.

Let's pick the pac-12 games - Week 12

3-2 last week for 31-34-2 for the year. 0-1 for my lock of the week for 7-4 for the year.

Home teams in italics

WSU
by 4.5 over Colorado - Nothing i've seen from WSU suggested they should be favored over anyone. Colorado covers.

Arizona by 1 over Utah - Weird line, Utah covers.

USC by 6.5 over Fucla - Two reeling teams. Take the underdog and the points. fUCLA.

Oregon by 22.5 over ASU - ASU covers.

Cal by 6.5 over Furd - Two shitty teams. no idea, but wilcox doesn't cover td spreads. Furd.

Oregon State by 1 over UW - UW hasn't looked great, but this is a good matchup for them. UW covers.

Non conference lock of the week: Texas by 7.5 over Iowa State - Iowa State covers.

monster analysis of the 2023 36 scholly departures:

1) shocky's new neck tatts with the wording "don't be a dumb azz#" r 100% spectacular!

2) 4 grad transfers kyle smith, ryan puskas, nick alftin & zach johnson did not find new homes for the 2023 season

3) other than the 2 ucla transfers literally every young man leaving berkeley is departing for a new skool that is significantly worser from an academic perspective that is gonna impact their future ability to earn income/build wealth...the 3 biggest **** ups wuz wuz ashton hayes (and his moms) to nevada, kai milner (and his dad) to northern arizona & chris street to utah tech

4) would be awesome if knowlton & his worthless bureaucrats jenny & markeisha would enter the transfer portal never to be heard from again

5) there will be multiple medical retirement announcements (a couple might surprise u) after the ucla game this season, football is a violent sport & best wishes to braxton croteau, justin richard baker & tommy christakos for earning their berkeley degrees

6) very happy for guys with berkeley degrees who are getting a chance to play during their final year of eligibility such as decarlos brooks, elijah mojarro, slater zellers, dario longhetto, orin patu & trey paster

7) kinda wondering if a bad attitude guy like damien moore who traded his berkeley degree for a fresno state degree is gonna look back when he's 30 years old working at the 7/11 in lodi with the dawning realization that his decision comes with 50 year consequences?

8) the bears lost very little talent that would favorably helped the 2023 team:

**** j michael sturdivant: would've started at wide receiver, his lack of precision with routes is gonna hinder his nfl ambitions

***jack plummer: would've been the bears qb1 at this point in the season but honestly would prefer 3 and a half years of the developing nando & his unique infectious enthusiasm which is critical to the chemistry of this team as the coaches are not emotional leaders...here's the thing with jack, he studied 45 minutes a day with the grad cert program from his off campus apartment before watching game film & never even walked around campus...he wuz not emotionally connected to his teammates other than a couple of the wideouts including j mike

***femi oladejo: keo is a much better +1 athletic quick twitch insider backer with a much higher football iq than femi (who frequently ran into the wrong gap) but obviously we would want oladejo now that jackson sirmon is sidelined for the rest of the season

ben coleman would be on this list too but his early season ending injury in tempe means that his playing value would've been zero...and sorry zellers & longhetto r not the answers to anything other than fun times in old town

and there's really no one else who departed that could've materially helped this football team other than maybe doms or something

Cal vs Pacific Game Thread

Cal is up 3 early with Aimaq heading to the line.

Jaylon has a very good feel for the game and can make good decisions so quickly. This is in stark contrast to Askew who wasted two possessions holding the ball up top and missed a wide open Jaylon both times.

Our defense is allowed wide open looks and far too many transition opportunities.

The offense is getting a good look every time Askew doesn’t bring the ball up.

Wilcox - damned if he does, damned if he doesnt

I can’t imagine we are playing the style he prefers. Comments that our defense was our strong suit over the past few years while lamenting our weak offense missed the fact that our defense was “good” because we played a ball control offense that ate up time. Our defense wasn’t on the field that much and the other team had less possessions to push up the score.

Now that we have a faster paced offense, our D is getting rolled, much like it was during Dykes’ days.

Rather than losing boring 23-17 games, we are now losing giving up 40+ points.

Today

I certainly didn't expect USC to fire Alex Grinch on Sunday morning, so the last few days have been unexpectedly chaotic. I apologize sincerely for the delay on the recruiting breakdown -- I have an interview this morning, a Zoom call at 10:30 and then I'm putting it together for you. It will be comprehensive and have all the intel you're looking for.

In advance of tomorrow's basketball game, I'll have a basketball story for you. Matt, Maria and AJ have the rest covered!

Crucial match on Saturday between Cal MSOC and #22 Stanford

Greetings everyone! It's been a while! Figured I would make more of an effort to swing by with Cal-Stanford content and the like. I'm covering a lot of different sports at Stanford right now, which gives me more opportunities to head up to Berkeley, which is fun!

In men's soccer, Stanford and Cal have a really important soccer match on Saturday. 5:00 PM PT at Stanford. Final match of the regular season for both teams. Stanford is ranked #22 in the nation right now, but has been kinda up and down lately. They lost their most recent match to UCLA 3-1 and Cal played them tough in Berkeley a couple weeks back in a 1-1 draw. If you want to read my recap, click here. Stanford was impressed with the overall environment that Cal had with the band and then just in general, the talent that Cal has on their team. They've got a good squad this year.

P.S. I will set up a thread early next week that is dedicated to my Big Game content, also giving you all a chance to ask me any questions you have on Stanford. I kinda wanted to post something before I dropped that since it's been a while since I posted on here. I figured the soccer might attract some interest. Hope you guys are doing good!
