Before I give you guys my theory of as to why the staff didn't pursue now USC shooting guard Jonah Mathews, let me first say that Jonah is 6'3 and not 6'1. That was an error on my part! Haha. Now, while I couldn't get any nitty gritty details of as to why they didn't pursue him, let me make it clear that the reason the team didn't get pursue him was nothing personal. They think he's a great young man.
There's one of two reasons why Jonah Mathews didn't come to Cal: (A) The staff didn't think his basketball skills either warranted a scholarship offer from them or they just didn't think he was a good fit. I.e. Purely basketball related reasons. (B) Jonah Mathews himself wasn't all that interested in coming to Cal.
Now, of those two options, I get the sense that (A) is more likely since everything I understand of the Jonah Mathews situation is that the staff wasn't pursuing him. I'm basing this on small pieces of evidence, but I feel like I have enough here to do a thread on it. The point is, all the data I have points to the coaching staff simply not thinking Jonah Mathews would be a good fit on the team for reasons that are at least mostly basketball related. Maybe there were some other factors like he didn't want to play with his brother or something like that, but that kind of stuff I wasn't able to dig up. What I was able to sense was that he just wasn't a kid who the staff really had their eye on for reasons that are once again basketball related. They think he's a great kid and all that. It's just that his brand of player isn't a guy who they really felt a need to get. Keep in mind he's a shooting guard and not a point guard. So, he would have joined both Tyson Jolly and Oscar Frayer as two wings on the team. Tack on Sam Singer, Jordan Mathews, Jabari Bird, all seniors, and Roman Davis, more of a 3, all capable of playing the 2 and suddenly you are very crowed at the shooting guard position.
So, what do I know for certain? They weren't recruiting him and they think he's great young man. So, with that as my launching pad, I think it's safe to say that they just didn't think he was a good fit. Now, some of you are wondering why they would go after Dejan Vasiljevic. Good question. First of all, keep in mind that at this point, Vasiljevic doesn't have an offer. Secondly, with Vance Jackson and Jayce Johnson going elsewhere, and Charlie Moore not a guarantee, the staff may see more value in adding another shooting guard. But, at that point, it's all speculation because no offer has been made and it's possible that Vasiljevic has his eyes on other schools besides Cal. Anyways, hope this helped shed some light on the Jonah Mathews situation. It wasn't a lot, but I figure this is better than nothing.
