At the risk of distracting people from the important conversation now happening on the “How PC is ruining Santa Clara” thread…
I’ve been pondering a phrase that I’ve seen CalHoopFan write a few times now: that "Cal this year could have a special season”.
It got me thinking about what things am I looking forward to seeing in 2015. Why I am looking forward to watching Cal football...
Here is my list:
Excited that we’re less than 2 months away. What are you excited about seeing from Cal Football?
I’ve been pondering a phrase that I’ve seen CalHoopFan write a few times now: that "Cal this year could have a special season”.
It got me thinking about what things am I looking forward to seeing in 2015. Why I am looking forward to watching Cal football...
Here is my list:
- Exciting games. Last year the three games against Arizona/ Colorado/ Wazzu was about as exciting a stretch of three consecutive games as I can remember (perhaps in all of college football). Sure, I almost had multiple heart attacks but it sure was fun to watch. This Cal team competes to the end…and I'm hoping to see them really compete with some of the Pac 12 elite.
- Lasco. Feels unheralded to me, whether in Cal’s offense (often overshadowed by Goff and our passing game) or in the Pac 12 overall (given UCLA’s Perkins and Utah’s Booker). But he had a real breakthrough season last year and it is exciting to think he could be even better in 2015 with an improved OL.
- Goff. I think this is the year we could see Goff become a truly elite college QB. When was the last time Cal fans were really excited about our QB situation? Goff could be the key to us winning the really big games (UCLA, USC, or Furd). I don’t think he’ll win the Heisman, but I think an early season run (maybe 5-1 or better start for Cal, if everything breaks just right) would bring some real excitement and buzz to Cal and Goff’s Heisman publicity
- Treggs/Lawler/Davis. Spectacular one handed catches, explosive plays, great route running and execution. Plus these are great representatives for Cal (especially Treggs, who bleeds blue and gold)
- OL: Likely much improved. Exciting to see the momentum and progress being made, both in recruiting OL and results in the trenches/on the field. Will be great to see players like Borrayo really thrive this year
- Secondary/Antoine Albert: Could be the year where we are the most improved pass defense in the country…but on a personal level I really like the back story of folks like Antoine Albert and how he has overcome his speech challenges. Hope he tears it up on the field this year
- DL/Looney: Hopefully part of a much improved pass rush, but more than that we finally get to see Looney actually play a real game for Cal. Have heard so much about how well he practices and people are high on him…finally we get to see him play on a Saturday afternoon.
- Up and coming players: Folks like Downs, E Brown, Strickland, Enwere, Uluave, and Ude. Not sure how much we’ll see them this year, but these guys feel like the future of Cal football.
- Dykes: Love him or hate him, we’ll finally see what we’ve got in Coach Dykes.
- APR: Off the field, I’m looking forward to real progress and hopefully a big jump in the APR given all the work being done in the classroom. I love Cal athletics, but I love Berkeley (the university) more. It really hurt to have Cal be the lowest APR in the Pac 12.
