Max Gilliam had a really impressive performance at the Steve Clarkson QB Camp and on this day anyway looked a lot better in the drills than some quarterbacks rated much higher than him.

The Cal commit is very compact in his motion and gets the ball out quickly. Early on, he did an excellent job in the drill where the quarterbacks had to catch the snap and throw it as fast as possible out to receivers without resetting their feet or finding the laces. Gilliam looked smooth and he was consistently zipping it out to receivers.

There were times when Gilliam let his lead shoulder get away from him (his left shoulder would open up and the pass would get away from him) but after it was pointed out to him then Gilliam fixed it and it wasn’t an issue the rest of the day.

On the vertical passing routes, Gilliam was very solid and through numerous impressive passes. His deep ball comes out fast, smooth and he zips it on a line – not putting a lot of air under his passes. Gilliam also throws outside the numbers on the field which means either the receiver is getting it or nobody is because the safety couldn’t get over in time.

On the run, Gilliam was very solid especially rolling to his right. Against the grain (rolling left and then throwing across his body) Gilliam was a little wild but still zipped it to receivers.

Gilliam was good in the pocket, good dropping back and throwing and in the shotgun and he also was good throwing on the run. There were some missed passes here or there but Gilliam was definitely one of the best quarterbacks at the event at least on Saturday. Really strong performance from him.
