Put together some thoughts on recruiting going forward
Looking at the scholarship chart currently, there’s four scholarships open for the class of 2018 (three if Tre Watson takes the redshirt, which I believe he will), which is why they’re being a bit trepidatious as to how they fill this out, as they can’t promise what isn’t there until they have the room, which is why we haven’t seen many offers lately, at least since Doughty was offered and almost instantly committed. I still think it’s going to be a 25 person class, those scholarships are going to have to come from some sort of attrition in one place or another.
RB: 1 (this is if Watson redshirts, which I think is looking likelier)
TE: 1 (if it’s the right guy, looking for a bigger body guy to pair with Castles, who’s more of the receiving type, Ragle has told me that like with the DL, they're looking for guys who have the big frame at 6'4" or 6'5" that can move for the spot, which they don't have at the moment)
DL: 3
LB: 2 or 3, addition of Doughty helps this area, with a guy who can immediately go
ATH: 1, if they can get more speed, that’s what they’d use this spot for hypothetically
Offer List for 2018
QB: Got their guy
RB: Allen, Newton, Cunningham, maybe Malone Mataele if they can flip him from Utah
WR: Pretty done unless they can get Crocker or Enis
TE: (Trey McBride just committed to Colorado State, which tells me two things, that either he really wanted to play with his brother, at the hometown school, or Cal didn’t want him, or both) I think this is a prime spot for a JC guy, just a matter of who.
OL: No JC guys stick out
DL: Manoa (who will be on a mission next year either way), Wade, Tupuola-Fetui
LB: MJ Tafisi, Eli’Jah Winston, Salua Masina, Demitri Washington, Williams (if offered). Merlin Robertson appears to be not considering the Bears as much anymore
DB: Basically done, with Anusiem in
I’m admittedly surprised that they haven’t offered any more in 2018 at the defensive line position. Zeandae Johnson will be back next year and he flashed extremely well in the spring, but he still had a major knee injury. If they can land Wade (who hasn’t taken an OV since his Cal one during the Ole Miss game, not sure if that's telling, he's very hard to get a hold of anyway), it’ll go a long way.
The early layout of 2019
Guys that you’re losing after the 2018 season
QB: Forrest
RB: Laird (Watson if he redshirts)
WR: Vic Wharton
TE: Malik, Kyle Wells
OL: Mekari, Bennett, Ooms, Uluave
DL: Only Chris Palmer
LB: Kunaszyk, Funches, Tongilava, (Saffle if he doesn’t redshirt, which I think he will)
DB: Tartabull, D. Brown, Turner
Specialists: Klumph, Coutts, Vera
That’s an estimated 20 man class as it stands at the moment, though it’s going to probably be a little bit bigger due to attrition in one way or another.
One thing we touched on with the OL recruiting is that this may be a better fit for a JC OL due to class balance. Here’s who they’ve offered that are the main early targets so far.
Offer List for 2019
QB: Bachmeier
RB: Austin Jones, Zach Charbonnet
WR: Jake Smith, Colby Bowman, Mycah Pittman, Kyle Ford, Joseph Ngata (didn’t make it to the SC game, want to get him on another visit later this season), Jacob ‘Asa’ Turner
TE: Ethan Rae (tore up his knee before this season), Patrick Herbert, Isaiah Foskey
OL: Haven’t offered anyone, Julius Buelow and Enokk Vimahi are two guys to keep an eye on that haven’t been offered
DL: Faatui Tuitele, Siale Liku, Hunter Spears, Ty Robinson, Mase Funa
LB: Maninoa Tufono, Lolani Langi, Joshua Pakola, Henry To’oto’o, Bru McCoy
DB: Chris Steele, also watch out for Jeremiah Criddell and Isaiah Rutherford to get offers here
They’ll also need a punter, but finding one of those should come much later.
