So I was checking out what was on ESPN2 last night, and happened upon something called "Heroes of the Dorm." So I was curious and flipped it on. Didn't take long for me to realize it was some sort of video game contest. Just as I was about to flip it off (because I have no time for video games), I thought I heard "UC Berkeley," so I continued watching.
Low and behold, I saw yet another example of how hapless Cal is with its branding. "UC Berkeley" was playing Arizona State. I wonder how many people watching knew UC Berkeley is Cal? So here is an opportunity for great national television exposure to build the equity of the Cal brand, to I'm assuming a high value demographic, and Cal/UC Berkeley is PISSING away a great opportunity. Instead, it comes off like "UC Berkeley, a bunch nerdy smart kids at some small school." Not "The FLAG-F*CKINGSHIP UNIVERSITY OF THE STATE OF CALIFORNIA."
Aside from the absurdity of having two brand names, I would have thought the video game team would at least call itself Cal. SMH.
