I think that you can learn a ton from the past two ncaa champions in terms of recruiting:
1. You can not underestimate the value of a really good point guard, in big games the ball is in their hands at the most critical times and the ability of a good point guard to draw contact and penetrate is critical (Napier and Jones). Ty Wallace is very critical to being a great cal team if the other players come and he will need to really improve is handle.
2. Free throw shooting is critical. If you are going to want the ball and have ball at the end of the game, you need to be able to hit 75% from the line. UConn and Duke won their title games because they did not miss from the line.
3. Depth is somewhat of an overrated term. Duke rotated 8 guys, UConn had a similar rotation. I noticed when I watched Utah and even Kentucky, Gonzaga, these teams that claim to be able to rotate 10-11 guys makes it very difficult to get into any kind of flow on offense and defense. These are 18-21 year old kids playing 40 minute games with a 35 second shot clock, playing 2 games a week, they should not be tired.
4. The one on one offensive style in college simply does not work because games typically dictate a half court flow because of the shot clock. I think, despite Kerr's connection to UofA, that Cuonzo should really try to talk with the warriors, and attempt to implement the warriors spread offense, it would make them very tough to guard.
5. Duke ran through essentially with 4 legitimate freshman, if Cal gets those four freshman, with the supporting cast, final 4 goals are within reach provided points 1-4 are addressed.
