This is my take on the post Wallace play. It is one man's opinion. No representation that it is accurate.
Wallace's guard position: Singer has done a good job. The loss of Wallace has not been a negative. There are those who would say: See I told you so! We just had to get Wallace out of the lineup! We just need to get Singer running the team.
Actually, except for the first half of the ASU game, Singer has been Singer. ASU took his cape away at halftime and he didn't get it back for the AZ game. The defensive pressure definitely limited him. His ball handling skills are average. Not close to Wallace's. I would give certainly give Sam the nod when it comes to judgement. Wallace thinks he can score anytime he wants and forces the ball when he should not. Singer knows he cannot normally create a shot off his dribble so he does not. He is a 5-6 point scorer.
Martin realized Chauca cannot compete at this level. Especially on defense. His occasional three does compensate for this liability. That is why Brown backed up Singer and did a great job. He can, and has, played every position in HS
Stepping up: The reason the loss of Wallace did not hurt was because the rest of the team stepped up their contributions. Not because Singer really filled the gap. It helps when you have several guys who can go off and score 20+ points. You can lose a guy and you can overcome it.
Coaching: The coaching staff did a great job of preparing the team to step up and make up for Wallace's loss. Cal could just as easily have gone into the tank.
When Wallace comes back: The team will learn and grow from the loss of Wallace. I doubt his role will be the same when he comes back. But he will be an important addition..He will learn from watching the team play without him. It is going to be a little late to shore up his NBA credentials. I think with his basic skills and athleticism he will still find a spot on an NBA roster.
