I exchanged a few texts with the Georgia athlete after his visit to Cal on Friday. I'll be talking to him in more depth tomorrow, but wanted to pass along his initial thoughts and my impressions in the meantime:
He was blown away. The campus, coaches, facilities and setting all surpassed his expectations. He thinks Cal could be a great fit for him, and it will definitely be one of his top schools going forward. Good right?
Not so good: One of the first things he cited was the distance from home, and that it's "the only negative". To point that out, unprompted, tells me that Moran doesn't want to go to school this far from his family. So while I think Cal did make a great impression, and I do think they'll be included in any subsequent "top X" lists he puts out, he won't be coming here. Bridesmaid, IMO.
And both sides are probably okay with that. I personally like a lot about Moran, but he's not a finished product and Cal may be able to do better.
We'll see if my impression changes after I talk to him tomorrow.
