BERKELEY – Cal forward Jaylen Brown has been named to the five-player Freshman All-America team, as announced Wednesday by the U.S. Basketball Writers Association.
Brown is averaging 15.0 pp and 5.5 rpg for the Golden Bears (23-10), who open play in the NCAA Tournament Friday in Spokane, Washington. Cal, which is seeded fourth in the South Region and ranked 23rd nationally, will meet No. 13 seed Hawaii at 11 a.m. PT. The game will be televised by TBS.
The 2016 Pac-12 Freshman of the Year and a first-team All-Pac-12 selection, Brown has reached double figures in scoring 27 times in 33 games, with a high of 27 vs. Richmond and again at Utah. He has four double-doubles on the year and ranks fourth on Cal’s all-time freshman scoring list with 494 total points.
LSU's Ben Simmons is the recipient of the Integris Wayman Tisdale Award as the national freshman of the year. The others on the Freshman All-America team are Marquette’s Henry Ellenson, Duke’s Brandon Ingram and Kentucky’s Jamal Murray.
The USBWA has chosen a national freshman of the year award since the 1988-89 season. It was named in honor of the late Wayman Tisdale in 2011. Tisdale was a three-time USBWA All-American at Oklahoma and the first freshman ever to receive first-team All-America honors from the USBWA. Cal’s Jason Kidd earned the freshman of the year honor in 1993.
