Talked with Jake tonight about his Cal OV, enrolling early, the perceived uncertainty around Dykes' future and more. The main takeaways:
  • Not that his commitment was in any way wavering, but the trip only solidified things for him.
  • During his one on one with Coach Jones, they talked about how he'll need to adjust when he gets to campus next month. The main things: getting used to the speed, and losing about 15 pounds.
  • He'll come in playing right tackle. Its where he's most comfortable and where Coach Jones likes him as well.
  • He was hosted by Vinnie Johnson (Friday night) and Ryan Gibson (Saturday night). For a guy who has been to campus a ton and seen all the usual sites, the highlight for Curhan was the time he got to spend hanging out with the other linemen, and the current group of freshmen. Seeing how comfortable he felt and how well they all got along was big for him...especially since he's a high school senior now but will suddenly be a college freshman in just a little over a month.
  • The feeling is that an extension will be announced very soon. Both the commits and the bulk of the players felt that things were being totally sensationalized by the media last week. It was largely business as usual within the program, and Curhan felt good about things once he was on campus and in the thick of things after a week of seeing so many different things being reported day to day.
  • He, along with the other EE's (Gilliam, Duncan and Clark) will serve as hosts next month for the January OV weekends. He thought it was funny that they'll be hosting other recruits even though they will have only been on campus a short while.
  • This will be his lone official visit. He's excited about Cal and the direction of things.
  • He was named the MCAL Lineman of the Year, which he was pumped about. He played both sides of the ball (left tackle and defensive tackle) for the Giants this season and felt that he was playing the best football of his life in the second half of the season.
I'll have a full story with quotes from Jake. Very smart and insightful guy.
