MEN’S BASKETBALL:
Rabb Named Karl Malone Award Candidate
Sophomore Ivan Rabb Is Among The 20 Members On The Watch List For The Annual Honor Recognizing Top Power Forwards
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – California sophomore Ivan Rabb is among the 20 NCAA Division I players garnering early looks for the 2017 Karl Malone Power Forward of the Year Award, the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame announced Thursday.
Named after Hall of Famer and two-time NBA MVP Karl Malone, the annual honor recognizes the top power forwards in Division I men’s college basketball. A national committee comprised of top college basketball personnel determined Thursday's 20-man watch list.
Rabb earned second-team All-Pac-12 and Pac-12 All-Freshman laurels after a record-breaking rookie season that saw him set the school freshman record with 291 rebounds on the year. The Oakland, Calif. native ranked second in the conference and led the Golden Bears in field goal percentage (61.5 percent), rebounding (8.6 rebounds per game) and blocks (42). Rabb started all 34 contests, turning in 27 double-figure games. His career-high 21-point, 15-rebound performance against Oregon State added to a 13-point performance vs. Utah in the Pac-12 Tournament earned him conference All-Tournament laurels. He capped off the season with a double-double against Hawaii in the NCAA Tournament, pulling down 12 boards on top of 13 points.
The Malone Award committee will narrow its watch list to 10 players by mid-February, with five finalists selected in March. Players have the ability to play themselves on or off the list until the five finalists are selected by Malone and his selection committee. The winner of the 2017 Karl Malone Power Forward of the Year Award will be announced at the third annual ESPN College Basketball Awards Show in Los Angeles on April 7.
