Saw a report on HBO the other day (Bryant Gumbel's show; can't recall the name of the show - "Real Sports?"), and it noted that only about 14 schools turned a profit on intercollegiate sports last year. The vast majority of schools are running considerably into the red, and many are hitting students with significant fees in an attempt to balance the budget. Schools that cannot get the big TV money are, IMO, fighting a losing battle in the FBS.
