I took the liberty to interview one of the 2016 Cal women's basketball commits, Celeste West, a 6-2 forward from Garces Memorial High School in Bakersfield, CA. She had a lot of really positive things to say about Cal.
In regards to why she chose Cal, she said, "As the years went by, the coaches kept contacting me. They seemed really genuine and down to earth. They talked to me about things on and off the court. Talking to them, it made me so happy. The girls are so nice and really encouraging. Even when things go bad, they are able to stay together. The coaches and trainers are really devoted to making people better on and off the court. And then Berkeley, the weather in Berkeley is better than it is at home and I like the culture. Everything seemed to fit really well."
As for what she thinks she can bring to Cal, she said, "I think what I’m really good at is staying positive and being a team player. It was hard to cheer on my teammates and given them advice when I was on the bench [due to injury]. I’ll bring a good balance between basketball IQ and a positive attitude. Positivity, but still knowledge."
Note: She is coming off of shoulder surgery. She told me her shoulder feels great right now, but she was out for 5-6 months.
The rest will be saved for the article, but I thought this was some of the more important and key stuff that she said. She seems like she'll be a great fit for the 2016-17 Cal women's basketball team.
