Gary Parrish has an article on Sportsline.com that is exactly in line with my view.
-Amateurism is outdated.
-The only reason we care about players being paid (by agent, school, sponsor...whomever) is because the NCAA has a non-sensical rule against it.
Get rid of enforcement of some farsical notion of amateurism and we’d have none of these “scandals”.
The downside? Less money to lavishly pay coaches. Probably less money to support sports that don’t generate revenue. Could complicate Title 9? Some schools would probably cede and give up football and/or basketball, and all sports programs for that matter. We’d probably end up with some 20-30 elite football programs and a bunch of schools playing on same terms as the Ivy’s. That’s fine with me, frankly. But, player development would be negatively impacted in that scenario which harms NFL’s interests. Voila, the NFL steps up and compensates schools to continue as their farm system. This is all for the better!!!
