Wow, quite an interview with Chase Garbers.
Right off the bat, I wanted to get a sense of whether he was the kind of student Cal fans would approve of. So I asked about his GPA. And I wanted to know if Cal is screwed after switching from Nike to Under Armour. Turns out, it's not black and white.
Garbers grew up on the mean streets of South Boston, in and out of foster homes. He dropped out of junior high and got into numerous run-ins with the law. He eventually got a job as a janitor at MIT. It was there that his true intelligence was witnessed for the first time. Late at night, Garbers would solve complex math problems on a chalkboard in the hallway. A professor saw him and eventually took him under his wing to try and polish up this incredible, raw intellect that Garbers possessed.
Eventually, with the help of Robin Williams and his girlfriend Minnie Driver, Garbers freed himself of some of his demons. But it was then that things took another turn for him.
After following Minnie Driver to California and reuniting with her, Garbers resolved to take another go at high school. So he enrolled at a public school in a really rough neighborhood and was placed with a diverse group of misfits and hopeless cases. It was tough going, until Michelle Pfeifer came in and changed their whole perspective on learning. She made it fun and related to them in a way that other teachers hadn't attempted to.
Just as things were turning around for Garbers, Minnie Driver was killed in a drive-by. The perpetrator? None other than Kevin Plank...CEO of Under Armour.
After months of grieving, Garbers took one last stab at a fresh start. He transferred to Corona Del Mar in Newport Beach and found his calling: playing quarterback. Colleges took notice. They offered. He's listening.
Cal sees a lot to like in Garbers. The intellect is there. Robin Williams and Michele Pfeifer spotted it, even if his GPA doesn't show it. If Cal can overcome Garbers' blood debt against Under Armour and Kevin Plank, it could be a great success story.
