PROVO, Utah
- After putting up eye-popping numbers in each of her first two games this season, Cal senior Kristine Anigwe has been named the ESPNW National Player of the Week and the Pac-12 Player of the Week, the outlets announced on Monday. Anigwe is averaging 30.5 points per game and 17.5 rebounds per game so far this season – both of which rank in the top five in Division I – while leading the Golden Bears to a 2-0 start.

This is the second ESPNW National Player of the Week honor for Anigwe and her fourth time collecting Pac-12 Player of the Week recognition.

In Tuesday’s season-opening win over Houston, Anigwe made her presence felt, scoring 37 points and grabbing 13 rebounds as the Golden Bears battled to an 80-79 win over a tough and talented Houston Cougars’ squad. The three-time WBCA Honorable Mention All-American stole the show in the third quarter, scoring 21 points in the third quarter alone, going 8-9 from the floor and 5-5 from the foul line over that stretch. Anigwe’s 21 points in the third were the most by any Cal player in a single quarter since the NCAA moved to quarters for women’s basketball at the start of the 2015-16 season. The Phoenix, Arizona product also went a perfect 11-11 from the foul line in the win over the Cougars, tying her career best for the most free throws made in a game without a miss.

Anigwe followed up Tuesday’s performance with another dominant outing on Sunday, going off for 24 points and 22 rebounds as Cal defeated Penn State on the road, 75-58. Anigwe’s 22 rebounds finished three shy of her career best set last November at Brown and just four shy of tying the program’s single-game record of 26, held by Gennifer Brandon. A three-time All-Pac-12 selection, Anigwe now has two career games with 20+ points and 20+ rebounds, both coming in wins on the road.

With her strong start to the season, Anigwe continues her climb through the Cal record books. Sunday’s 22-rebound performance gave Anigwe 906 career rebounds, passing 2015 Pac-12 Player of the Year Reshanda Gray for fifth on Cal’s career rebound list. Anigwe, who won USBWA National Freshman of the Year honors in 2016, also ranks fourth on Cal’s all-time scoring list with 1,910 career points.

On Monday, Anigwe was also announced by the Atlanta Tipoff Club as one of 50 players on the Citizen Naismith Trophy Women’s Watch List. The third consecutive year Anigwe has been named to the watch list, which is used to eventually determine the 2019 Citizen Naismith Women’s Player of the Year. The list will be narrowed down of the course of the season with the winner announced on April 6, 2019. The Naismith Trophy Watch List can be found here.

Anigwe and the Golden Bears continue their road trip on Tuesday, taking on BYU at 4 p.m. MT/ 3 p.m. PT. Cal has won all four previous meetings with the Cougars, including a 70-45 victory last December in Berkeley.
