Signing Day is a week, fast approaching as the Bears currently only have 11 commitments locked down in their 2017 class, ranking them 80th in the country by Rivals. Cal has 6-7 more scholarship slots open with that week to go.

Quarterback

2017 Class Commits: Chase Garbers

Remaining Prospects

None. Cal will not pursue any other players at this position.

Running Backs

2017 Class Commits: Biaggio Ali-Walsh

Remaining Prospects

None. Cal will not pursue any other players at this position.

Offensive Line

2017 Class Commits: Mike Saffell, (Daniel Juarez, 2016 greyshirt)

Remaining Prospects (Cal expected to sign 3-4 linemen total)

Poutasi Poutasi - The former Louisville commit came onto Cal’s radar within the past week, and Cal has put a lot of emphasis on making Poutasi the next Cal offensive line commit, securing an official visit this weekend and sending OL coach Steve Greatwood and QB coach Marques Tuiasosopo out to see him. He also spent time last week at the Polynesian Bowl with Saffell, who also happens to be visiting this weekend. Cal has a solid shot with him, as he appears to be a high priority right now.

Nick Ford - The onetime Nevada commit has his list down to four and is set to commit on National Signing Day to one of four schools, of which Cal is one, along with UW, Colorado, and Utah. Ford has visited each of the schools, visiting Cal in December. The Bears have one advantage, being the school that his father played at in the mid-80s. Greatwood has visited him, but his interest level from other schools has steadily risen over the past month.

George Moore – While the CSM prospect has visited Cal in the past, his interest has been with Arizona State, Oregon (who just offered him), Oregon State, and Baylor, where he just took an OV. It’s not likely that he stays at home and comes to Cal.

Tight Ends

2017 Class Commits:
None

Remaining Prospects

Ben Moos - The recent Utah decommit is set to visit the Bears over the weekend. The son of Washington State AD Bill Moos has not gotten a Cal offer, but is definitely a target for the Bears

Erik Krommenhoek has also been mentioned as a candidate, as he was one of the first players Wilcox visited after getting hired, but looks likely to stick with his USC commitment

Wide Receivers

2017 Class Commits: Taariq Johnson, Jeremiah Hawkins

Remaining Prospects (Cal not expected to sign more than 2 wide receivers total)

None, they already have 15-16 scholarship wideouts (12-13 when they move a few players to TE)

Defensive Line

2017 Class Commits: Gabe Cherry, Alex Funches

Remaining Prospects

Sadly there aren’t many 300+ lb linemen who can be swayed to come to Cal on short notice, and with the switch to a 3-4, there’s enough bodies there for the moment. Not having a DL coach doesn’t help in this category at the moment

Linebackers

2017 Class Commits: Paul Scott, (Da’Quan Patton?)

Remaining Prospects

Kyle Harmon - Local 2-star LB headed to Cal Poly at the moment. Had a very good year at Freedom. Visited Cal for the UCLA game unofficially. Does not currently have an offer from Cal

Nate Landman - 3-star LB from Monte Vista currently committed to Colorado, was visited by Wilcox pretty immediately after his introductory press conference. Hasn’t been offered by Cal at this juncture.

Cornerback

2017 Class Commits: Elijah Hicks

Remaining Prospects

Emmanuel Flowers - Another guy without a Cal offer, but is getting an in-home from Coach Alexander in the coming days and has one more visit left that he could make to Cal.

Safety

2017 Class Commits: Jordan Genmark-Heath

Remaining Prospects

Evan Fields was the first offer that the new staff put out, but there hasn’t been much traction there. They could make a late run at Rhedi Short, but he appears to be fully committed to Arizona.

Special Teams

2017 Class Commits:
Chris Landgrebe (preferred walk-on kicker)

Remaining Prospects:

Ryan Stonehouse would be the other one they’ve looked at, but since Tommerdahl is long gone and Cal currently does not have a special teams coach, there’s a big question mark in this area.

Guys confirmed to be visiting over the weekend: Garbers, Saffell, Poutasi, Moos
Potential visitor over the weekend: Flowers

The lack of offers on the defensive side of the ball make me uneasy, but that could be a side effect of not having a DL or LB coach yet.

Also a thought. With it being so late in the class to make a big impact, they could choose to fill a couple of spots, then give a couple of scholarships to walk-ons who've contributed well, like Ooms and McMorris
