Over breakfast this AM.
Some observations:
- Falk is a good QB. Quick release, decent feet, accurate. Deep ball is not great and he can be skittish in the pocket
- WSU has three very good WRs
- Their OL was not as good as I expected. Falk was under pressure more than one would think against Wyoming's base 4 man rush
- They have a running game. Decent blocking and decent backs. Went away from it in the game which made no sense
- Their offense lacked explosion. Lots of short stuff. Wyoming dared them to run and often had only 5 in the box, sometimes six
- Wyoming outplayed them really. Their QB was not good and that killed them in the red zone
- Wyoming ran the ball VERY effectively on the Cougars. I believe that will be a key for Cal
- WSUs LBs are quick and play upfield a lot but are susceptible to wide running plays and big plays over the middle. Their D reminds me a lot of the old Lyle Sentenich regime. They will run blitz a ton
- WSU secondary looked average at best. Wyoming's WRs got separation and beat them deep regularly. WSU went to a zone that was more effective
- WSUs offense looked better than it produced. I believe most of that was Wyoming dropping 7/8 on every play and getting some pressure on Falk. Plus, when Wyoming knew WSU was going to run, they were not effective
Net net is that WSU did not look as good as I expected, especially on defense. I think they have the talent on offense to make trouble but I think Cal is a clearly superior team.
