Upon further review: the O-line really struggled

Had a chance to watch a replay of the game. When Goff had time vs UW, we actually did pretty well on offense. However, our o-line had a really rough day and was the root cause of many of our stalled out drives. Seemed to be 30% blown assignments, 70% losing the 1-on-1 battle. Also of note, Cochran had a much worse game than Farley. Below are my observations per drive, focusing on O-line performance.

Drive 1: Farley gets faked out by a defender and doesn’t pick up the real blitzer, who forces Goff into a quick throw to nobody on third down. Cal runs on 4th and comes up half a yard short, Qualls gets inside leverage on Farley and forces an unsuccessful cut-back by Enwere.

Drive 2: Granado completely whiffs on his assignment, Goff evades pressure but is flushed out of the pocket and has to throw it away on 2nd down. On third down, Rigsbee pulls to the left side but gets eaten alive by Feeney, who sacks Goff with one hand while fending off Ribsgee with the other. Cal settles for a field goal.

Drive 3: Rigsbee / Moore both decide not to pick up Johnson in a 3-man rush, and Goff is sacked on 2nd down. We run it up the middle on 3rd and 22 and then punt.

Drive 4: TD with mostly good protection for Goff, although Goff had a couple errant throws when defenders came through the line unblocked

Drive 5: The goal line stand. On 2nd down, they lined a guy directly over the center Granado and got penetration stopping the run. On 4th down, Stephen Anderson gets beat.

Drive 6: Borrayo pulls to the right to block for the reverse but instead pushes his guy directly into Lawler as he receives the ball. Field goal results

Drive 7: Granado beat by Qualls 1-on-1, who sacks Goff. Cochran completely whiffs on his block, but Goff throws the TD while being hit anyway.

Drive 8: Interception, though the O-line had played well on this drive.

Halftime

Drive 9: TD thanks mostly to the PI on Lawler that wasn’t called. O-line did fine that drive.

Drive 10: Enwere fumble returned for a TD. I think this was a fumble, as Enwere was holding the ball down below his butt, and I think the ball hit the ground and popped out before Enwere’s butt hit the ground. Poor ball security.

Drive 11: Cochran got beaten around the edge on a number of plays in this drive, even though Goff kept the chains moving. Later on 2nd down, Qualls beats Granado 1-on-1, shoving him all the way back into Goff and getting the sack. Heavy pressure on 3rd and long due to a 6-man rush, but there was a difficult catch available for Treggs to make.

Drive 12: Cochran gets beat on 1st down, commits holding to save Goff's life and makes it 1st and 20 for us. On 2nd down, neither Borrayo nor Cochran pick up anybody as a blitzer runs between them, Goff has to throw it early. We settle for a field goal.

Drive 13: Cochran completely whiffs on his guy, who then commits a facemask trying to sack Goff. Later in the drive, Moore gets beaten around the edge resulting a drive-killing sack on Goff, and we’re lucky it wasn’t ruled a fumble.

Drive 14: On our final third down, Borrayo and Moore get shoved back by Vea (a Freshman), which forces Watson to cut back unsuccessfully. Luckily Goff wins us the game on 4th down.
