Tyrone Wallace on the team’s mindset going into Friday night: “I think we’re really focused right now. We’re excited to start the season off. It was good to have the exhibition and kinda get a feel for the actual game, and now it’s go time, so I think we’ll be really focused. I’m excited to play and go out there and give it our best.”
Tyrone Wallace on what he liked from the team on Monday and what he thinks needs tweaking: “I think the chemistry was really well for our first game together. I think we moved the ball, a little bit of everybody got involved, so that was good. The ball wasn’t sticking too much. On the defensive end, I think we need to get better, just communication. There are different coverages, so I think we could do a better job at that. So a lot of what I think we need to work on is on the defensive end. Also, boxing out and stuff like that.”
Tyrone Wallace on the team not being a finished product right now: “I think we still have a lot of room for improvement. I think we can’t accept the things that we aren’t good at right now. I think we have to continue to try to do our best in those areas and get better. But, I do realize that it’s still early in the season with our first game here on Friday and so there’s still a lot of room for improvement.”
Tyrone Wallace on the hype: “I don’t really pay attention to it. So, it’s easy for me. I just try to keep my head straight and focus on what we have in front of us and it was the exhibition and now it’s Friday against Rice. It’s not really much of a distraction for me.”
Tyrone Wallace on whether or not people doubting Cal motivates him or the team: “I think the most important thing is we believe in ourselves. I think we feel we have a lot of talent, we have a lot of pieces that can play and do different things, and so I think it’s just important that we continue to work together, grow, and get better. Because what everybody else says is not really important.”
Tyrone Wallace on whether or not Coach Martin is coaching the team differently with the new pieces added: “Not really. I think if anything, he’s probably a little bit more willing to let guys just play a little bit more. He doesn’t want us to play as robots as he always says, and so when we get out there on the court, it’s just, we’re making plays, not necessarily coming down calling a play every time. But other than that, he’s the same coach, he’s still gonna be on us, talking the whole game, if we’re messing up on defense, he’s gonna know when to pull us out, just pretty much the same, yeah.”
Tyrone Wallace on whether or not people will be surprised in the way that they play: “I think last year we probably didn’t have as much talent, we were forced to do different things, but I think this year, you’re gonna see us out on the break a lot, trying to get easy baskets in transition, but like I said, other than that it’s pretty much the same. Coach Martin always tries to emphasize getting out early and scoring as fast as we can as long as we’re getting good shots, so I think that’s one of his staples and so we’ll do that, but other than that, it’s pretty much the same, yeah.”
